Things to do near Kitty Hawk, NC

I will be there in a beach house for a week with my family (fiance, 2 yr old son, 13 yr old brother and his friend, mom & stepdad).

I'm looking for some cool stuff to go out and do on rainy days, or when Im tired of the beach. I like extreme stuff, sports, history, food, etc. Family oriented helps too...some stuff could be done by all i'm sure.

Ideas running through my head are parasailing, jetski, rent an atv for the dunes?, fire on the beach at night (is this legal?), bodybording, roanoke settlement (unsure of distance), casino?? I want to fish as well, and wont have my gear with me.

Any suggestions?

Take up hang gliding. They teach it just up the road at Kill Devil Hills.

Re: Things to do near Kitty Hawk, NC

There's the wright bros memorial and a little museum in kitty hawk/kill devil hills. I've seen the hang gliding too right around the wright bros memorial.

The NC Aquarium is on Roanoke island near manteo not far from nags head/kitty hawk.

Here's a link to the Aquariums "Links" page with info on stuff to do in the area (Lost colony and elizabethan gardens among others).

I'm sure you could find a deep sea fishing charter boat if that's your thing.

Depending on when you're going, it might be chilly and the water might still be FREEZING!

Re: Things to do near Kitty Hawk, NC

I have spent many vacations at the Outerbanks and there is a LOT to do there! Climbing the famous dunes, hang-gliding off them, if you dare. The Wright Brothers museum is good for grown-ups & kids. Wild horses up towards the north in Currituck are neat.

Driving down route 12 to the south, Bodie Island & lighthouse is worth a quick stop. Keeping further south on route 12, I love the Hatteras Lighthouse, it's one of the best on the east coast. It has a stunning view from the top on a clear day. Driving even further down the island, to the village of Hatteras, you can take a free ferry ride (courtesy of the state of NC) to Ocracoke Island. Ocracoke has a small area with wild horses where you first get off the ferry. Further down the road into the town is a cutesy shopping/walking district and harbor.

Up in Kitty Hawk you should be able to find wave-runners, surfing rentals, deep-sea fishing charters, etc. That kind of stuff gets a little sparser the further down route 12 you go. I doubt that you will be able to ATV on the dunes or do fires on the beach... I don't think that is permitted anywhere in NC that I have ever seen. Erosion & beach damage is a big concern there.

Re: Things to do near Kitty Hawk, NC

I was born & raised in North Carolina, my family still mostly lives there. That said, I have never seen very much of the NC coast. It's a 113 mile drive to Myrtle Beach, SC, and that's the beach I've spent the most time at. One of these days I'm gonna commit to getting aquainted with the coast of the Tarheel state. I know there's alot I'm missing out on in that regard. Enjoy your visit!

Try Roanoke Island and the Lost colony play (at night). Also drive to Manteo (1/2 day)... There is a museum an old 15th century ship, some shops, etc...

Stop by and say hello to Andy Griffith.
