My wife turned 50 last year and I threw her a party and invited all of her girlfriends. That wasn't much, just a lunch in the private dining room of a nice hotel restaurant. But the thing she loved the most, and which had all of her girlfriends jealous (which is very, very important), was a ten minute video I made using photos and video clips from her life. From birth to parenthood and everything in between, all set to a nice romantic bit of music. It was a huge hit and I earned major hubbie points on that one.

I have lots of suggestions, none of which can be posted here.
Ok... ...I just turned 50 last fall.
What I DID NOT want was a party where people brought me all sorts of dumb things like black balloons and Geritol, yadda yadda yadda. Pure cornball.
I settled on letting dh2b set up a small party of very close friends at my favorite place (Chinese buffet). He surprised me with a Friendly's ice cream cake, featuring lots of chocolate layers, and 5 candles (one for each decade).
A few friends got me the usual "over the hill" birthday cards to make them feel better.

Ok, you just need a gift idea...here's my wish list...
- Chocolate (the really good expensive European stuff, not Hershey's)
- More chocolate
- Tickets to a show and dinner out for 2 (you escort or she takes her SO as applicable)
- A homemade coupon for a full day of whatever I want to do, and you're driving me around. Your treat within reason.
- A membership at a local museum, or season tickets to a local small theatre group.
- A full massage session including facial and manicure (dh2b actually did this for my 49th. What a guy!)
- A gift certificate to my favorite store (online counts)
- Cheese of the Month club (or similar)
Will any of these fit OK?

I am leaning towards body spa not oriental though That would be for the husband.

A lot of good suggestions previously posted. I would add maybe a really nice bottle of wine or champagne or a mall gift card(to shop at any of the stores at the local mall).

Steve...since we don't know anything about the lady, it's kind of hard to know what she would like.
If she has a good sense of humor, perhaps you could give her a pic of you in a nice frame, with a big grin holding a sign that says Happy Birthday.......

Being totally atypical, I would suggest a weekend romance package with no mention of age.

Sorry do I need to include husband? The husband is the one throwing the bash. I ask him if it would be appropriate to send a stripper? He said go ahead. I think he is joking. I know them for 14 years but I don't get in her personal life.

When I turned 50, I specifically asked for no party, particularly one of those where "over the hill" is the theme. DH complied, but my staff at w*rk did all wear black on my b'day in memory of my lost youth. That cracked me up!
Several friends and family made contributions in my honor to a few of my favorite charities...I thought that was the best!

I'm not a woman, but I'm planning on spending my 50th doing something exotic and/or adventurous...somewhere I've never been before, something I've never done before. But that's me......

For my 50th co-workers held a "wine" (sparkling apple juice) and cheese party in the office at lunchtime. They know I like fancy cheese so they had a great variety of them with assorted crackers, bread, fruit. I was also given a weighty tome "The Encyclopedia of Cheese". My son gave me a gift certificate to the Nemacolin Woodlands spa for lunch, facial, massage, manicure, pedicure. Nice, but I had to split it into two visits as it would have been too much indulgence for me in one day.

No, not necessary to include husband in the gift. I just was wondering with respect to the nature of the gifts I suggested.
All clear except maybe the all-day chauffeur idea.
Male strippers are fun for a girlz only party, but if there are family members with no sense of humor or children present, it could fall flat. Really flat.
Music is always a good idea. Depending on her tastes, of course. Enya is a choice that is pretty much universally liked. YMMV
