It dawned on me that I had joined in bashing cable on a thread about bad companies. I still don't care for cable companies, but I gotta admit this was a shock....

I've had TW cable since 1996; got RoadRunner HSI shortly thereafter. Don't have a lot of premium service other than two DVR boxes. $173 a month.

Not long ago I was fed up with modem as I had to reset about every day. Took in, nice lady exchanged it and remarked that it was an antique. Then she informs me she can lower my bill; I'm thinkin' oh...maybe $10 a month? It's now $97 a month. She told me it was good for a year but to come back in a year and renew the lower rate.

I guess the fact that I'm getting ATT Uverse solicitations about every three days must have something to do with it. I was shocked at the magnitude of the decrease. Oh well, I'll certainly take it.

There may be some downward pressure on cable prices. A lot of people are dropping cable. Including me.

I was shocked at the magnitude of the decrease.

I was shocked at the magnitude of what you were paying. $173/month! $2076 annual!

To me, it only seems like a decrease in relative terms.

Same here...a long time TW customer. I had the "All in One" package for years.
I forget the new name of the same service package, which is digital and HD cable with no HBO, CineMax, Showtime etc, DVR equipment, HS Internet, telephone, security and fire monitoring.
I live out in the sticks, so my choices have always been limited.

Mr B and I went in person to the local TW office last year to get the rate reduced. We were given the promotional rate for 1 year, and told to return and do same this year.
We recently got a notice in snail mail stating that we were automatically being renewed at the current promotional rate for new customers, for another year.
I'm too lazy to go look up the historical prices of service.

Glad to see the "monopoly' is crumbling. :D

I hate the fact that you have to 'renew' the lower rates every year. Why play the games, keep them low, especially for your long term 'loyal' customers.

I routinely call every year, tell them that their competitors are offering rates much lower, with specifics being mentioned by me. Then I tell them if they can't match the rates or get close I want to cancel. Then they never can do it, so I tell them I am cancelling. Then miraculously they pull a special rate out of their hat to get me to stay as a customer. Usually this results in me paying 50-60% of the going rate for internet (all I purchase from Time Warner Cable). This year I didn't fare so well, so I'm paying 72% of the rack rate.

In years past other competitors have offered huge sign up bonuses that make switching really inexpensive. This year I didn't see any, so I stuck with TWC for another year.

To the OP, you saw a big rate decrease because you were probably paying full rack rate for years. They didn't want you to be enticed away by much cheaper (and fuller?) offerings from competitors. I think they are running a special in my market where you get phone, pretty decent cable, and high speed internet for $99/mo, and you get $150 cash back if you are a new customer switching to TWC. That's the "going rate" now for bundled phone/data/tv services.
