Van Der Sloot

Pretty crazy. Marriage offers for him.

Joran van der Sloot boasts of marriage offers while in jail | al.com

How about a trip to Utah and marching down the isle for the firing squad instead?

I don't think I could serve on a jury for him, and maintain an open mind. The Holloway and Flores families probably feel the same as I do about him.

The sickening part, among other things, is his modus operandi is to purposely give a confession then recant that and tell so many stories to make himself an incompetent witness.

At least he's in Peru this time--they won't treat him nearly so well as Aruba. Sickening. But odd how his story holds the world's attention and has for so long, when you think about it.

My 12 year old grandson was watching the news with me today at noon. He asked me what the big deal was with this guy. I had trouble explaining all the news hype.

He's been all over the Spanish news around here. I guess I haven't been watching the English news so I have no idea. I've been hiding from news in general.

Pretty freaky!

Surprised Jorge Rubio didn't meet him on his tour up from where he was captured.

"Van der Sloot killed a beautiful young woman in Aruba, or most people think he did, but his family had so much influence locally that he was never even tried for murder.

Now, he has apparently killed again but in Peru where his family's influence cannot help him. People are interested because they are hoping that this time he will finally be jailed where he cannot continue killing young women, and justice will finally prevail."

12-year-olds are perfectly capable of understanding corruption, influence, and people wanting to see others get what they deserve. (This story is on the level of the Lone Ranger - - will good prevail?) You can use the opportunity to pull out maps and refresh his memory as to where Aruba and Peru are.

I'll give him 24 hours with the general population of the prison in Peru and he'll either be someones b*tch or dead.

If my recollection is correct, he requested, and got, solitary confinement for that reason. He is in a 6.5'x11' cell - - about the size of a worker bee's cubicle.

I understand that Peru does not have the death penalty but I suspect it may be meted out in the prisons. There is no way Peru will return him to Aruba until the justice system has run its course and frankly I don't think he will live long enough to serve any sentence.

So that's why the cubicles felt so much like a jail back in the days of w*rk

Maybe he'll be treated like Steve McQueen in the movie Papillon:

That's what I was thinking, too. Sure felt like jail to me.

Half the room in a cubicle can be taken up by filing cabinets and office furniture. Sure, he has a toilet in his cell but that doesn't take up as much space as do filing cabinets all along one wall.

Lori Berenson spent 15 years in prison in Peru and was just released, so clearly it is possible to survive. Still, the fact that she was associated with Peruvian terrorists meant she had some friendly prison-mates. I suspect Mr. Van Der Sloot will not have as many friends and will more likely be a target.

From the US Dept of State

Quote:
As of last year there were 44,800 inmates (2,794 women) locked up in Peru and conditions are described as 'harsh'. If a prisoner has money they can purchase luxuries such as cell phones, meals from outside and drugs. For a prisoner who is poor these small luxuries are not possible. All prisons are considered overcrowded with poor sanitation, lack of nutrition with bad food and unsanitary kitchen conditions and epidemic levels of HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis. There is also unreliable running water, kitchen facilities and some prisoners having to sleep in hallways due to lack of space.

Prison guards and fellow inmates reportedly abused prisoners. There were deaths of inmates in prisons, most attributed to fellow inmates, but some were due to negligence by guards. Guards received little or no training or supervision. Corruption was a serious problem, and some guards cooperated with criminal bosses who oversaw the smuggling of guns and drugs into prisons.

Good point about all the b.s. over the last 5 years.

A couple of links. One the article about the marriage proposals.

Maybe, just maybe, we should have the trial BEFORE the hanging?
