It's probably the same as the entertainment value of opera, or watching soccer on tv, or knitting a sweater. I just don't understand it. Each person is different. Shooting a firearm takes skill, patiences and a lot of practice to do it well. The same as the other activities I listed. Just for the record I don't shoot for the entertainment value. I shoot to increase my skill and accuracy, with the thought that I might need to use it someday to defend myself. That takes any entertainment out of shooting.

Re: Virginia Tech shooting and gun control

"What is so different when a drive by shooter kills two kids going home from high school in Newark?? That never gets any press nationally."

What is so different between this and the 40,000 to 50,000 each year killed on the highways? What about the 100,000 dead annually from medical mistakes?

It's the media, sweetheart, the media.

They are the engineers in these trainwrecks. Fan the flames, spike public attention, pretend there is an easy answer, feed the mob. Then pretend that all their obsessive focus doesn't cause more copycat incidents like this than the guns that get the attention.

And the sheep run this way and that, at their bidding.

Run, sheep run!

What's sad is that kids can't just go outside and "play"; they must constantly be "entertained"...

Wow, I don't even know what to say. Sort of like, "we're from the government, and we're here to help"
Gun owners have EVERYTHING to fear from gun control. What they try to do is slowly erode you rights. They start with only the "bad" guns and work their way up from there. First it's "assault weapons" whatever that means, then it's autoloading shotguns, then it's handguns, and on and on.

They say "well, we only want the nasty military style weapons, don't worry about your hunting rifle" The funny truth is that in all honesty, my hunting rifle is the most deadly gun I own. I can punch holes through a car door, wood blocks, whatever at 400+ yards. With my handguns I'm luck to hit the target at 50 yards. For the left it's all about feeling good, not really making a difference.

You know there is no difference between guns and any other dangerous thing that the society needs to regulate.
Bombs are not usually allowed.
You can't put any kind of vehicules on the highway: they are regulated.
You can't throw chemicals into the water system.

All are limitations on our freedom by the government... I mean us... remember: government of/by/for the people.

It's clear from many of the replies on this thread that gun control can't be intelligently discusssed, so there is even less hope for enlightened gun laws or gun control in this country. So, I guess we will continue to live and die with our paranoia. I'm also done with this thread.

Anyone who abuses nuclear weapons should be punished ! But don't punish all of the law obiding citizens who have a legal right to nuclear weapons.

Don't punish all of the innocent law-abiding citizens because some whack job goes on a rampage and illegally uses nuclear weapons !
Nuclear weapons don't kill people, people kill people !

When they outlaw nuclear weapons, only outlaws will have nuclear weapons !

If we just enforced the laws we now have against people using nuclear weapons we'd be just fine. But don't take away my constitutional right to have nuclear weapons !

I LOVE IT! That is the standard liberal response. I guess we just aren't "enlightened" enough to have more gun control (thank G_D)

Maybe all the left wing politicians will just give up like Rosie did this week and admit that they can't defeat the NRA.

The solution is to ban assault weapon for everyone but the army!!! Most police work doesn't even need this kind of weapon.

Only weapons used for defense or hunting should ever be sold. And registered and licensed.

I equate gun manufacturing to tobacco manufacturing. It is beyond me that powerful market interests can successfully go against the wellfare of the whole society by lobbying Congress.
Only he didn't use an assault weapon, he used an ordinary Glock handgun.

Ha

There's one slight problem with your stance: there are people who have no concept of personal responsibility for their actions. This is the definition of INSANE. This man was obviously totally insane. Expecting him to take responsibility is like expecting your dog to tutor math. I have no problem with the concept of controls being in place so that people like this do not have access to weapons (although, on a practical note, I'm not sure what those controls would be). Or, maybe we should just make it against the law to be insane??

A whacko will find a way to go nuts. But there are plenty of other murders that are brought about by the convenience of the medium--specifically handguns. Guy finds his wife in the sack with another man and grabs the easily accessible handgun from the dresser drawer etc.

I think you may be right in the case of someone as nuts as this shooter. However, in general, the argument that a gun is no different than a knife or club is bogus. There are studies that show than when young males handle guns, it increases their testosterone levels and makes violent behaviour more probable. They are also a lot more effective at killing. If it weren't so, you boys wouldn' be so emotional about keeping them.

Yes well the 2nd amendment says there should be a protecting militia able to be armed. It also says that the militia should be "well regulated"...

Doesn't say that everyone should be able to have guns without any kind of government regulation.
