What did you accomplish in 2010?

Thought this might be fun...

In 2010, I....

1. Lost 40lbs on a low-carb diet
2. Finished construction on the bank-owned home we purchased, and got final approval from the world's most anal strictest HOA
3. Took DW on a romantic anniversary vacation
4. Finally broke down and replaced my 14-year old pickup truck
5. Had "the talk" with my boss....

Ditched Ameriprise - Set a goal on Aug 15 to ditch Ameriprise by Dec 31 - completed the transition from Ameriprise to Vanguard on October 1

Learned all about asset allocation and indexing as a viable investment option

Began using Quicken in August to track every penny spent - learned that we spend about $1500 less per month than we thought.

Penciled in our ER date: Sept 1, 2016

And all this thanks to finding the early-retirement forum....I thank you, my DH thanks you and most of all our FIRE nest egg thanks you!!

Gained another year of seniority in retirement by avoiding gainful employment.
Quit smoking - gained all of the weight that you guys all lost in the process.

Found a different home locally, bought it
Put original retirement-home-to-be on the market (funny how plans change)
Planted bckyard citrus and stone-fruit orchard
Went on Caribbean cruise
Gutted workshop (replacing electrical, insulation, wallboard and cabinets yet to be done)
Enjoyed life

Supported my DH when he lost his job in Jan 2010.
Helped him realize that we could make it just fine on his pension if he decided to retire.
Learned to live with ER-ed DH!
Took a vacation with my sister to a Florida beach.
Finally replaced our aluminum single pane windows from 1955.
Decided NOT to return to working for H&R Block for the upcoming tax season. Still having mixed feelings but now more glad than sad.
Maintained 25 lb weight loss from 2009.

This year I:

1) retired
2) increased our net worth by 51%
3) maintained my weight
4) consolidated our accounts at Vanguard (wanted to do that for a while)
5) made necessary changes to our life and disability insurance policies to reflect new circumstances (wanted to do that for a while too)
6) decluttered the house

1. Faced one of my worst fears and survived it.
2. Received my third President's Volunteer award (gold) for police work. After nine and a half years of volunteering at the police dept and court, I decided to leave. I no longer wanted a schedule.
3. Began weight training.
4. I'm letting my hair grow long after years of short styles.
5. Facing another fear, but I realize I will survive this one too.
6. Made new friends; one of which is very close to me...the best 'accomplishment' of all.

  • Saw one or the other of my far-away kids and grandkids 4 times in 8 months plus another two visits coming up over the next few weeks.
  • Reconnected with two dear old friends (couples) from way up north.
  • Have not used the alarm clock except to get up on time to make a flight.
  • Read great books during daylight hours.
