What good are men?
From Gender Myths: Let Science Decide, comes the following quote on why women live longer than men:
Study after study shows that men, especially young ones, take more risks than women. It is one reason women live five years longer. But it's not the only reason, according to Goldberg.
"You still have heart disease," he said. "Heart disease tends to be the big factor that makes men die earlier, even once you get beyond the traumatic injuries."
Another reason is evolution, Goldberg and Leyner said.
"Women are evolutionarily around to prolong the species," Goldberg said. "They need to raise our children and to have our children."
Leyner said, "Men are basically sperm-dispensing machines and once they've done that, they're not as necessary."

I'm happy to do my part, but I wonder what would happen to men's life expectancies if the women weren't around!
Never mind, I just thought about preparing food and keeping up hygiene and maintaining sanitation...
Scott Adams (freshly married, heaven help Dilbert) has recently become aware of another perspective on this issue...

I wish that I were just a sperm-dispensing machine. For me, that is the fun part. Taking out the trash is not so much fun.

I've heard the Binford Model 9000 Super Reciprocating Deluxe Vibrator can be upgraded not only to take out the garbage but also has a sympathetic listening mode. The end is near I tell ya.

Re: What good are men?
Ok, I'll bite. He accepts (tolerates) my faults. A real companion in this journey called living.
A father to our children, he has played an important role in their character and skill development. I won't list their accomplishments, but want to note that their father has made a significant contribution to their lives. Starting life is easy, the follow-through is what counts.
As a son he has attended to the needs of his parents, and has assisted me in taking care of mine.
He is willing to contribute his skills and time to the family and community, unless he is 'dissed. In that case you are on your own and have lost a resource that others have paid a great deal for...
The measure of a man is his contribution to his family and community. My man stands tall.
