What is wrong with humanity?

The genocide in Darfur, and other acts are appalling, but they come off as statistics in the news. This story really crushed me, though:

Police kill man seen beating child to death - Crime & courts - MSNBC.com

How could someone do this to a small child? As a father of two daughters, 3 and 1, my mind is boggled that someone could be in a mind to do this. I'm so angry right now. Angry and heartbroken.

I'm guessing the guy had to be on drugs, don't you think? There is no explanation.

About the humanity question though - it is a bit heartening that all of those people stopped to try to help.

Hmmm... Perhaps that is why Stephen Hawkings has such a fear of Earth being visited by an "advanced" civilization from Outer Space.

It is what makes us "human."

Appalling. I know people stopped to help, but surely one of them must have had a tire iron with them?

If the reports that the guy was stomping the kid are true, then it is just as well that that the police killed the guy. Feel bad for the cops, having to do it. The kid would have had extreme damage, probably not repairable even by miracle trauma surgeons.

Humans are capable of endless kindness and unspeakable evil. That range is evidenced daily.

Yes... there is an explanation other than drugs. There are some people that are just "evil" in the world for lack of a better term. Nothing drove them to it, no drugs, no alcohol, no bad upbringing etc. There ARE people in this world that are evil in nature, and seek to do harm to others for no reason, other than their sick self gratification. I know this is difficult for some people to accept. Many desparately want to believe that everyone is exactly the same, and that no one is better than anyone else. This is not true. There are certain acts that you CAN do as a human being, that will irrevocably remove your status as "human". And most of us ARE certainly "better" than these people.

the range of human behaviour is considerable; deviation from the norm, unfortunately, considerably more so on the undesireable side

I've always felt that humanity is still in its "child" stage. We are, for the most part, petulant with the occasional flash of wisdom. Many social experiments sought to transform our world into one that focused on the needs of the many, but they have all unfortunately failed. This is due to our general inability to look beyond our own needs/wants. Certainly we have made progress over the years, decades and even centuries, but we have so much further to go before we are ready to join a larger universe.

You meant that as a joke, but isn't that what's happening with our efforts to clean up the environment, switch to non-polluting fuels, etc....?

At least the police shot him on the scene.

It is good that someone tried to step in to help, but you'd think they could have done more... I guess I don't know how far I'd push it if I ran across such a bizarre incident. It's not like you'd run across this so much as to know how to be prepared. I'm going to make sure I know where my tire iron is, though, just in case.

I know nothing more than has been reported, but I think it's hard to expect bystanders to be very effective when facing such bizarre behavior from an obviously violent and out of control person. Invervention without training and/or skills could have easily led to more deaths and there's no way of knowing how likely it would have been to help the toddler. According to reports, the incident appears to have been quite advanced before the first people happened upon it. Much as I would like to think heroic action is possible, it would be hard to imagine what the (astonished) bystanders could have done for the already badly injured victim.

Now, if we later learn that the guy was off his meds or on parole or some such, then it would be interesting to see all that could have been done to prevent this tragedy.
