What to do with ties after retirement?

My father won one of those contests in the late 1970s with a cute little burlap number that included both a lined pen/pencil pocket and a calculator pouch with a snap closure. What put him over the top was that my mother actually had a pattern for a tie of that size, a sewing-machine needle that could handle burlap, and the crimping tool to install a snap closure.

Yes, he's an EE and it was the Westinghouse nuclear division.

We had one of those "Ugly Tie" contests at my old company about 20 years ago. I remember the winning tie which was bought from "Joe's Junk Shop" and still had its price tag (25 cents) attached to it LOL! Second place was a crumpled tie from the bottom of another guy's bag after he got out of the military before he joined our company. It was an ugly yellow-puke-green color and had an image of a fruit salad. It was so crumpled that the end of it stuck out horizontally. Funny day.

I have not worn ties regularly after my former company got rid of its dress code in May of 1998. I have about 20 or 30 ties but only a few of them I really like wearing, the ones I have worn once or twice a year when I have had to attend formal events such as weddings or funerals. I probably should get rid of the rest of them at this point.

Went through the collection yesterday, and I'll be bringing 32 of them, all pretty decent ties, over to Goodwill this afternoon. Kept 10, a few for fun, the rest boring but useful when needed.

I asked DW about this and she said a friend of hers had the idea about sewing them all together and made a quilt. Thought she had enough ties but ended up having to beg other friends to raid their closets for out of date ties. DW said the quilt was beautiful.
