Listening to the press telling him how bad he secretly thinks things are, and the politicians ideas of how to make things look better until after the election, then overreacting badly to that stimuli.

Hmm, well...I think he's the one that carried along a big bunch of mess until it was about to reach critical mass, then he quickly retired.
