Re: What's your favorite Sci-Fi Movie?

Yup

Andromeda Strain, E.T., Independance Day - loved Edward G Robinson in Soylent Green.

As to the worst - some of the 1950's jobs were pretty bad. How about some earlier - Flash Gordon et al - anybody recall any names

heh heh heh

Just finished DVD 3 of 4 of Firefly, from the TV series. I expect the Movie Serenity will be on my short list.
Somebody else recommended this awhile back....Rented for sister and she really liked and it was mad that they cancelled....of course she had never heard of it or watched it when it was on tv.... :P

Are we talking about the 3 late 1930s serials with Buster Crabbe? They were enjoyable in a campy sort of way. The contemporaneous Buck Rogers serial* (also with Crabbe) was more of the same. There was an overtly campy X-rated remake in the 1970s mentioned above, "Flesh Gordon", which was marketed to mainstream audiences and it had its moments. The big budget 1980s remake was so-so, although I am told that it has a cult following.

Going farther back in time, there were quite a few good SF movies in the early-mid 1930s. "Frankenstein" was a good mix of SF and horror. "Things to Come" was a decent H.G. Wells flick with interesting visuals. Claude Rains was very good in "The Invisible Man", especially given the inherent difficulty of playing a, well, invisible man* He followed up with borderline SF "Clairvoyant" the following year, which wasn't as good and somewhat campy, but still worth watching.

Moving back into the silent era, there was, of course, Fritz Lang's "Metropolis", but you have to get a reasonably complete version (hard to find until recently) to fully appreciate it. I am also fond of the first 2 Mabuse movies, but stay away from the 1960s sequels. There is also "Aelita: Queen of Mars", a rather sloppy movie influenced by German expressionism, but Alexandra Ester's costume design was striking.

Apparently Metropolis i(1927 ?)s supposed to be pretty amazing for it's time. I tried to watch Brazil the other day on someone's recommendation. I will probably finish it some time this week.

Re: What's your favorite Sci-Fi Movie?

I have read a lot of sci fi.* My movie tastes tend to differ from my reading taste.* The only cross-overs are* Blade Runner and Dune.* Blade Runner is the only Phillip Dick movie I really liked and I like all his books.*

Dune and Blade Runner are at the top of my list of favorite sci fi movies.

If you can call Clockwork orange sci fi, that is up there too.

So are the Road Warrier movies.* These are some of the few movies I can watch more than once.

I admittedly like the Terminator movies, the Alien movies, the Matrix movies, Star Wars and even the Star Trek movies.* Heck I even liked ET.* It was sweet.*

I'll take a pass on Brazil.

I like to contrast the view of the future in a movie like Star Trek, in which everything works (and if it doesn't you just run a level three diagnostic), with Dark Star, in which everything is held together with duct tape.

Re: What's your favorite Sci-Fi Movie?

I'm going to go with an even tie for Alien and The Matrix. The former had excellent creepiness factors and the latter was a pretty creative concept.

I just saw Serenity. Although I'm a huge Firefly fan I can see why this bombed and why it probably spells the end of any series restart. It sucked. Really sucked. Took me three sittings to get through it, and I'll usually watch a so-so movie all at once.

The deep and interesting characters from the series became shallow, different and uninteresting. At least it explained some things and wrapped some stuff up.

Re: What's your favorite Sci-Fi Movie?

Kind of a hard call, but I'd say that in the running for my favorite sci-fi movie are, in no particular order...

"Logan's Run" (gawd I hope they don't eff it up when/if it gets remade)
"V" the original 1983 miniseries
"War of the Worlds" from 1953
"Earth Versus the Flying Saucers" from 1956 (a bit cheesy, but still great fun...I love seeing the flying saucers crashing into the local landmarks and there's a timeless scene where a scientist and his fiancee meet the aliens at what's supposed to be the Chesapeake Bay, and you see these massive mountains rising up in the distance)
"DeathRace 2000" from 1975. *It was a Roger Corman cheapie, and purposely campy, but I loved it!
"Westworld" from 1974. *I think even as an old-ish man, and without having to say a single curse word, Yul Brynner just exuded coolness. *Had a really creepy music score too. *Combining sci-fi and western was probably a hard thing to do, but I thought they pulled it off great.

Worst sci-fi movie? A Clockwork Orange. The only movie I ever walked out of before it was over.

I have a copy of A Clockwork Orange. I really couldn't get into it. I remember it was a pretty racey movie for it's time. I think it had an X rating or it was rated M.

I forgot about that one - pretty grotesque. If I remember correctly, that was set in about the year 2000. Guess we didn't become a dystopian world as quickly as Burroughs expected.

I like Blade Runner, Alien and Terminator. But I also remember those Japanese bomb mutant movies like Mothra with some fondness. Better than science fiction were the old vampire, werewolf, and mummy movies. I used to sneak downstairs after my parents went to bed to watch them on "Shock Theater."

And lest we forget from a thread last week, what about Soylent Green?

Grumpy, I thought I knew you. I feel that a divide has come between us. I liked Clockwork Orange. I liked Dune.

Re: What's your favorite Sci-Fi Movie?

I kinda liked "A Clockwork Orange". Slow and talky at times, and being British it just seemed a bit "off" somehow, but it had its moments. Didn't someone get their skull cracked by a giant dildo in that movie? Been awhile since I've seen it, so my memory's kinda fuzzy.

I liked "Soylent Green", too. It didn't have that big-budget feel or the flash and spectacle of many sci-fi movies, even the cheap ones, but I still found it an intersting watch. Kind of low-key. I swear, Charleton Heston got all the best lines..."Damn you all to hell" and "Soylent Green is PEOPLE!!"

I probably would add Planet of the Apes to my list of favorites, had I seen it when it first came out. I'm sure that ending was really shocking when first seen in theaters. But it's just been played to death, and watered down with increasingly bad sequels. Wasn't there a tv show too? And I do remember a cartoon that was actually kinda cool. I did finally get to watch Planet of the Apes on DVD, un-cut and widescreened and restored, a couple years back. It was good, but I guess just didn't leave such a memorable impression on me because I've been tainted by modern times, perhaps? And in some ways, it reminded me of an old Twilight Zone episode, "People are Alike All Over" which, interestingly, also had Roddy McDowall in it.

Clockwork Orange was for me, a real mixed bag. It certainly was a powerfull movie, I can still remember scenes from it all these years later. And it did have a story line. But it was too violent and ultimately not satisfying although the acting is excellent.

Don't know if its SF or SP(soft porn) but thought Kubrick's last/posthumous film, Eyes Wide Shut, should go on the worst list.

I read all the Dune books and loved them.* Except the ones written by Herbert's relatives or whatever. Hey, I still refer to my little sister as the abomination (just kidding sis).

I agree Clockwork Orange was a mixed bag and I probably would not like the movie as much now, but it sure was powerful when I saw it in the early 70s. Saw Dr. Strangelove at the same time.*

Hated Eyes Wide Shut.

My worst sci fi experience was the final episode of Star Trek Enterprise. Absolutely the worst finale of any television show ever made. It spoiled all reruns for me.

Re: What's your favorite Sci-Fi Movie?

If we are willing to branch into Anime, "Akira" is an awesome near future sci-fi epic - and please don't call it a cartoon.

All the fans (big cult following) know the tag line, "Neo-Tokyo is about to E X P L O D E".
