Pet and human hairs, shedded skin, pillow feathers, insect parts, clothing bits and other fibers, soil, mold spores, pollen, yeast, and God knows what else.

Re: Where does all of the lint come from?

While growing up my parents gave me a book called "The Secret House." It had highly disturbing descriptions of stuff like how skin flakes and all sorts of tiny critters get distributed in your house, and how chocolate ice cream is made. I stopped eating ice cream for several years (in retrospect, maybe that was the point of the gift...)

Yuck but accurate, which is why we'd rather call it dust or lint. Keeps us from thinking of the details.
