Why Athletes Can't (Shouldn't) Have Real Jobs

Jenkins: "He treats us like men. He lets us wear earrings."

5. Football commentator and former player Joe Theismann,
1996: "Nobody in football should be called a genius. A genius is a
Guy like Norman Einstein."

6. Senior basketball player at the University of Pittsburgh : "I'm
Going to graduate on time, no matter how long it takes." (now

7. Bill Peterson, a Florida State football coach: "You guys line

13. Shelby Metcalf, basketball coach at Texas A&M, recounting

Costas why he takes his wife on all the road trips,

These folks are the goof-balls of professional sports. We have all seen their equivalents in the workplace.

What is important is that folks with athletic talent recognize the transitory nature of their marketability, whether it be football or dance. My DD was recruited to be a professional dancer in high school, I told her to enjoy the attention but focus on academics. Need I say that she is a very successful executive who can dance!

Her toddler son doesn't get it when she does her version of Broadway dance routines. Little does he (or her managers) know what a magnificent athlete she really is.

brat, a cousin of mine danced in professional troupe after juilliard. got to travel the world. mom was thrilled when they performed here one year. when he burned out he went back to school, got new degree and became college dance teacher. then he went back again, got masters in counseling and became a therapist. he's real bright but the poor guy doesn't know the meaning of the word lazy.

I don't think that most athletes/coaches are any dumber then the rest of us are, it's just that much of what comes out of their pie hole is recorded by sports writers and ends up in print/youTube etc. No doubt about it, if much of what I have muttered over the years had been recorded and put in the papers or magazines that I would be looking like a complete dolt.

Don't get me wrong. I do think team athletics are important in the development of youth (dance is a team endeavor). My issue is when it becomes their one and only goal.

My athletic daughter's husband is a high school football coach. The parents in his high school don't value team sports. He says that getting good grades is not enough, they also need to learn how to work collegially with others. He also says that for some students participation in a team sport is the only thing that connects them emotionally to their schooling. This is coming from a guy who is also a CPA and who earned 4. in Accounting in college.

Some of the responsibility for immature behavior must be shared by their coaches. If winning is all they care about then they aren't developing their players. That attitude can be seen in homes, streets, and corporate environments.
