Why do we do this?

I've known two of my neighbors for over 16 years. I've known a third for over 10 years. I would never discuss some of the personal things I discuss on the boards with them. So why do we do it here, with people we've probably never met in person?

Is it the anonymity that shelters us? Or is it a deep seated need to confide in somebody? Or does the board actually give us a sense of community, of belonging to something more cohesive than our own home neighborhoods? Is it that we feel safer here, amongst persons of supposedly similar mindset? Or is it that we do not fear rejection and flaming from persons we have no real ties to?

This is one of those "roads less taken" that my mind occasionally wanders.

Re: Why do we do this?

The road less taken, good book by S. Peck.

To answer your question, nice to BS with people of similar mindset, also much to be learned from others here and other forums. I wouldn't want to discuss my personal financial state with any of my neighbors, nor would they with me.

retiredbop: great question. All of the above.

What happens in the ER forum, stays in the ER forum.

Re: Why do we do this?

Lets see, there are probably some local issues like parks, schools roads or whatever that you would discuss with your neighbor but not here. Its a matter of shared interest. If I had a neighbor interested in a financial discussion (I did once) then I would have those talks. Mostly my neighbors drink a lot, don't talk much and smile a lot.

Re: Why do we do this?

Ditto to Yakers. It is the only place I can find others that don't think I'm OCD about money and savings. Hard to find in our current set of friends/family--most of them are on the spend, spend, spend plan.

I will talk to the wall about money, savings, retirement, but no one here cares. I do like my job, though, because it is all about saving and investing, and my boss is all excited about DH and I reaching our financial goals.

I like the sheer variety of opinions/outlooks/demographics this board offers and the helpful advice on a huge range of topics.

The anonymity isn't a big deal to me--the dogs'll eat you if you come to my house! I do like contemplating just how much of what other folks say is BS, though.

Sam, I read the post before you edited it. Just wanted to say I am sorry, that has to be more than frustrating.

Re: Why do we do this?

I have very little in common with my neighbors and local friends money-wise or interest-wise. They love to shop and upgrade, including lots of personal upgrading in the form of perpetual plastic surgery :. The folks on this forum are much more interesting, funny and have great stories! Even though I am kinda shy and private I don't mind sharing some personal info, mainly because when everyone does, it makes for a better forum!

Re: Why do we do this?

All of us have one thing in common. How to make money and how to spend it...well a little bit anyway.

I don't know anyone personally that likes to talk about money, I honestly think the topic scares them. This board enables me to learn and put my 2 cents in when I feel that I may be of some help.

For the most part, I think it is a sanity check.

Besides, I don't have to fuss with my hair or put my make up on when I enter the forum. Now if all of y'all came over to my house, well...............

Oh, I don't know about that... I remember you talking about your 3 ring binder full of financial info! tee hee

Maybe we are ALL OCD (or CDO in T-Als case)

Anyway, I do think it makes a difference when it is a given that we all have similar goals.

It is a big PLUS that we can just skip the posters we don't agree with - its hard to do that in a real life conversation!!

There's a HUGE benefit! I find it really hard to walk away from conversations about politics and television shows when I've got a cold beer on the table in front of me! But here, I can blow them all off completely and still enjoy that beer!

Sarah ...hey now, don't tell anyone about my spreadsheet mania......
