Why in triplicate? 1099-R

Just received my 2018 forms from VG. Why are they required to send me 3 copies of the form?

One for the IRS, one for the State and one for you.

Thanks but no one has ever asked me for a copy. Could I send them to you instead?

I filed partial year returns to two states the year I moved (mid-year) from my former state which doesnít tax retirement income. I forgot to attach the state copy of the 1099-R (for pension and a Roth conversion). They didnít forget to send me a bill for unpaid state tax + penalties/interest. It got ironed out once I sent the state copy.

I really needed four copies that year: US, states #1 and #2, and steelyman.

I only get a single copy from Fidelity.

Well - actually, I'm set up for electronic only from Fidelity.

I used to get only a single copy from Fidelity. I download them now.

The only time I included a 1099-R form with my taxes is when I had taxes withheld from the distribution. Otherwise, I didn't include it.

Yes. I'll send you a bill for tax, penalty and interest if you don't.
