OK, so you are paying to get out of the FCC domain. Content notwithstanding. That is my point. If you do not pay, you do not get relatively uncensored content. So you pay extra for uncensored content, regardless whether it is your preference or not. THAT is my point.

It looks like a generic rant. I wonder why “bad language” or nudity is worth worrying over unless TV is your only source of those (especially the latter). Not that there aren’t some (not many) instances that enhance presentations but most seem gratuitous.

I would say what is challenging is to find good content that is not full of bad language and innuendo.

We do not particularly find crude language entertaining but as Sly Stone said, different stroke for different folks

If you do feel so deprived, and long for how much better it is in other countries, then don’t let the door hit you in the butt on the way out. That’s my version of to each his own.

Strange rant.

i tend to avoid TV now ( free or pay TV )

not only because of the rampant profanities ( or bleeps ) meant to be attention getters ( because the overall content is just lame , and you would simply 'switch off ' ) , but because of the endemic abuse of sound compression as well ( can't have you thinking in those quiet moments can they ?? )

the upside is another saving in the household budget ( lower power consumption )

surf the web ( with speakers disabled ) and think a bit , i say

many decades ago i was in the Army reserve ( National Guard to you US folks )

and they used 'mild porn ' photos and clips to 'spice up ' mind-numbing instruction sessions , i quickly grasped the logic behind the usage and foresaw the consequences ( armed young people with sexual urges interfering with their minds in life and death situations ... and other inappropriate times )

i guess they have discipline problems now ( and not just from substance abuse )

it did help me see the being involved in major war ( alongside such people ) wasn't the most rational of thinking , so not all bad

Only broadcast TV is completely free. Broadcast TV censorship is mandated by the FCC.

Personally I don’t watch broadcast TV nor other sources that make us watch advertising to pay for the content. I’m happy to pay for content to avoid ads. I’m happy to pay for content to watch what I want to watch.

You don’t like that the FCC controls censorship of broadcast TV? Oh, well. That’s not going to change anytime soon.

It is just another anti American diatribe from the OP, as is every other post from him. Lord knows if I disparaged a country as much as the OP I would have a boatload of those silly violation points the mods give out.

Not so at all, you are over reacting, some of us have lived in more than one country, this was purely an observation on my part. Just that in my opinion, if one is going to regulate something, it should apply to all. To me it just seems, that it is OK to do things that are considered by some to be say... distasteful on TV if one pays extra, that is all I was trying to point out.

It is somewhat disheartening that some folk use such as an excuse to run down or comment negatively on the poster. Oh Well. If one does not like a post, then why bother commenting at all.

On the other hand, most of you have responded with their own sensible opinions as I would have expected.

I do not really care.

At the end of the day I have a choice. I can simply change the channel, not watch the show again, or turn off the television.

I am not looking for problems to solve or issues to campaign.

Yes European’s are less prudish. When people are raising kids I don’t think it’s a good idea for them to be hearing or seeing foul language and nudity. We didn’t have cable when raising our kids and strictly monitors what they watched.

I guess I never considered any TV programming to be free. You pay for broadcast TV by watching commercials. You pay for public TV via your taxes and/or membership.

I tend to pay attention to non-monetary or indirect costs. To me they are just as real.

I don’t believe commercial television programming developed outside the USA at nearly the same pace (who remembers the scenes in National Lampoon’s Vacation when the teens are seeing only BBC’s cheese making TV show in London). Other countries might not have felt they needed to set guidelines. You can read up on Newton Minow (former FCC head in early sixties) and his “Television is a vast wasteland” comment here https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newton_N._Minow Sort of interesting.

Nudity and bad language may not be something to get worked up by, but I believe censorship should always be questioned.
Many years ago I spent a week working in Niagara Falls. The newspaper was reporting on a battle where some US citizens were complaining the Canadian TV was showing boobs that you could see in the USA, the Canadians were complaining about the prime time violence that was bleeding over the border to their TV's. Personally, I'm more offended by bullet holes than boobies.

Well, I'll just chime in here. FWIW, if a show uses the F* word three times we turn it off. It is astounding to me how many movies we skip away from in the first ten minutes nowadays. It's offensive to me to hear that word, and I consider it lazy on the part of the writers to use it.

Yes, my brother points out - it's "realistic" to use it. I don't watch movies for realism, I watch movies for escapism. Foul language bothers us, but each to his own.
