Why the 'D'?
DW, DH, DD...
Yes, I know you're referring to your wife, husband, daughter... and so on.* And the D stands for many things, dear being the most unlikely.
What's the real purpose of writing DW instead of wife, or DH instead of husband?* Just curious.

Disambiguation, presumably. What's the first thing that comes to mind (in 2006) when somebody says "W"?

No the 'D' stands for something else entirely in his case.

"sappy" has 2 relevant meanings in this context:
a : overly sweet or sentimental
b : lacking in good sense
Which one, if any, are you meaning to use?

I always thought it was a gentle reminder to keep messages civil, even when you are steamed at DW/DH and are ratting them out online to a bunch of complete strangers.

Re: Why the 'D'?
In conversation, I usually refer to her as my lovely young wife or my bride. *

Re: Why the 'D'?
when statisticians use "df" it refers to degrees of freedom ... my spouse often refers to me as "df" ... i assume it means "dear friend".
