Re: WordPlay

I still do crossword puzzles from time to time but not nearly as often as I used to. I learned to do them sitting on my dad's lap after supper as a kid of about 8 years old. I remember those times fondly and I think of dad (he passed in 2001) whenever I am doing one. I tend to stick with the puzzles in the Washington Post. I can't handle the NY Times puzzles. Mom was also a crossword addict but they didn't slow the onset of her alzheimers. Our family also had weekly Scrabble games although I haven't played Scrabble in many years now.

Yeah, I like the Crosswords. I do the N.Y. Times thru Thursday by myself. And I work the Saturday one with a old doctor friend of mine (he's good at it). I feel lucky if I get a few of the words.

The young wife does the newspaper crossword every day. She gets cranky if I help.

Re: WordPlay

I just signed up at www.BestCrosswords.com.

About 200,000 members over 4,000 on at the moment....I'm going to see if they have a forum...

I tried a sample NYT puzzle - to hard! and they want $35 a year to play... I going to see if I like to do them and if I remember things like a 12 letter word for Restores to good condition or 4 letter word for Atlantic Mackerel or Elvis' middle name on this site above....I'm too frugal to pay to play!

Re: WordPlay

Good luck with the puzzling DanTien!

You will soon learn many intersting facts like the 4-letter word for sea eagle, and the names of mountain ranges in eastern Europe, and ports in the middle east.

I like to do a crossword puzzle now and then. My co-worker and I do them at lunch, in a pointless combination of competition until we're both stuck, and then collaboaration.

Yup. You will notice those words frequently, ural and erne start with vowels and have lots of vowels in them... but I'm not going to give away all the crossworders secrets. You have to earn your way to the top, young man!

Re: WordPlay

I do at least one crossword puzzle a day. Most online puzzles use Across Lite which you can get here:

http://www.litsoft.com/

You can get some easy puzzles to solve here:

http://www.chron.com/content/fun/games/xword/puzzles/

The WSJ has a medium difficulty puzzle every week which you can get here:

http://www.fleetingimage.com/wij/xyzzy/06-wsj.html

The Sunday Washington Post is another medium difficulty puzzle you can get Here

http://www.fleetingimage.com/wij/xyzzy/06-wp.html

The Washington Post Puzzles answers are not unlocked until the following week.

Re: WordPlay

You're welcome Dan.

I put Wordplay in my Netflix queue. If you decide you like doing crosswords, you have a 100 or so good free ones in the WSJ and WP archives.

I get a kick out of the WSJ puzzles because I think they often have clever themes. I think it is easier to do them on the computer, but I prefer to do them with paper and pen.

Since we just had an election, you might find this interesting

http://barelybad.com/xwdthemes_110596.htm

This is one of Will Shortz's favorite puzzles of all times.

I loaded it and will now give it a try - I think I have to since it's one of Will Shortz' favs.

That's part of the fun isn't it - the clever plays off a theme...

I finished an easy one on bestcrosswords.com earlier, took a long time and well.... I had some help because when I would the put the wrong letter in it would turn red... ... but its a start....

Edit: Oh, this is the puzzle featured in Wordplay, where 39 & 43 across "Lead story in tomorrows newspaper" could be true for BOBDOLE or CLINTON ELECTED .... in the movie Clinton and Dole rif on this....

Re: WordPlay

Netflix delivered Wordplay today and I just finished watching it. I thought it was very interesting but DW was bored. It had a sort of sad ending. I thought it was interesting that one of the folks said the best solvers tended to be musicians and math types. I'm in the latter category.

My wife is a real crossword addict -- but only with Swedish crosswords. She does a few a day. They work a little differently in Sweden. Here's an example:
