Too many rock concerts in my ill-spent youth have left me with poor hearing above 5 KHz so audiophile recordings are of little use to me. 128K MP3's are all I need...

Dunno know if my Francis Albert Sinatra & Antonio Carlos Jobim CD is of 'audiophile' fidelity, but to my ear it's just wonderful.

In reference to the feel of "the room" in a recording, I think an excellent example of that quality is the "live" side of BB King's album "Live & Well," recorded at The Village Gate in the late '60s. Put on a pair of headphones, and you feel like you're in the club.

Thanks for those last two - I will start making a list of these suggestions to see if any of these are in our local library system. Some might be worth a listen for me, but maybe not a purchase. Or maybe I will purchase after a listen.
