I wonder if the whole reason for the confusion on this is that that it was intentionally marketed like this from the 401k administrator to your company reps when they your company was shopping for a plan.

ie. "Our plan allows your employees to remain fully invested while loans are outstanding".

Just not in their original equity investments.

Still don’t understand how funds can remain invested AND be distributed as a loan. (Or maybe it’s like a draw account?)

My instinct would be not to borrow from 401(k). Having said that, "if momma ain't happy, nobody's happy." You gotta do what's right for your family. If that means a potential change in FIRE date, only you can make that choice. Best of luck and enjoy the process.
