I've been living on small pension, then started 'harvesting' CD ladder, now feel somewhat obligated to draw on retirement accounts.

Anyone near Dayton Ohio want to help me shop for clothes?

Yeah, and in 2 1/2 more years you can start SS. Life is very good.

Just don't spend it all in one place!

Anyway, I've been trying to talk DW into spending it on some frivolous nonsense like a cruise to Hawaii. She will probably want me to behave like a responsible adult and do something sensible though.
A trip to Hawaii could never be considered frivolous nonsense. Maybe frivolous, but certainly not nonsense.

I wonder how many times a year a cruise ship actually drives out here from the Mainland U.S. or Mexico. Nothing pleasant about six-seven days of open-ocean transits.

In fact, I'm not aware of a cruise line that sails "to" Hawaii although maybe there is one. Back when I was just a tourist, I considered taking one of the various cruises between the Islands though I never did do that. I don't know what of that business remains as I don't keep up on it. Those cruise companies seem to come and go. Still, some folks love cruising and Hawaii would be an ideal place to do it IMHO. I think the part of Walt's post I was reacting to was the part about coming to Hawaii. I'm more in love with the Islands than I was when they were just my dream. And, heaven knows, we here need the tourist dollars. But that's not why I "steered" Walt this way. Can't think of a better way to spend money than to travel here. Just my opinion though.

The only taste of Hawaii I've had is by eating pineapple.

I love the Hawaiian Islands. I first visited in 1974 with my Dad on our way back from the Far East. When I lived in CA we flew over once a year to vacation. I have a cousin who has lived in HI since 1974. He chose to live there after grad school. He had a choice between HI or Maine and said that the optional wearing of socks sealed the deal. I might visit him next Christmas as a family wedding is in the offing.

I frequently see the NCL interisland ship from our back lanai coming into Honolulu before sunrise all lit up like a giant shopping mall. I think that happens on Friday or Saturday mornings. Otherwise I occasionally read about another ship coming in for some event or problem, or maybe we'll see them when we drive downtown.

Going back to the northeast must be especially nasty trying to maintain 25-30 knots and ending up with 30-40 knots of wind across the decks. But maybe they save fuel by going more like 20 knots. By day three it must seem like the movie Groundhog Day while the interisland ships sometimes are barely underway for eight hours before hitting a new port.

That's like asking Lance Armstrong if his bicycle has training wheels and a kickstand...

I'll have to look into it. I know submarines don't have them!

I don't think even the amphibs have stabilizers because it's one more thing to maintain/repair and they hate spending money on Marine taxis. Aircraft carriers might have stabilizers; I know some of those guys get upset if the roll exceeds 3-4 degrees. Otherwise I think all Navy vessels are as lean & mean as the naval architects can make them.

Submariners are wimps about rocking & rolling. If you're at periscope depth for longer than 30 minutes, let alone on the surface, people start reaching for their seasickness bags...

Oh, come on! Weather in Dayton is nice this weekend, with high of 48F tomorrow. Khan needs to spend some time outside. Surely, there got to be some female board members nearby who can go shopping with her.

Sounds like someone needs to start saving their pennies...

BTW, both of my Hawaii trips were tag-alongs on others' official business trips. All I had to do is pay for the plane ticket, food and my daytime mad money. Talk about LBYM vactions x 2!

I don't make any money, so I can't save my pennies.....hmm, maybe I could stop buying food and turn the utilities off, or enter a sweepstakes...or find someone to take me.

To us, travel is never nonsense nor frivolous. About Hawaii, we have been to the big four islands, but can use return trips to Maui and the big island.
