It may not be a bad thing for one of the couple to stop working first.
For us, having our income dwindling over a few years, first by my start-up failing, and then my wife's quitting her job, and me working only very sporadic part-time now, it eases our ER process. It would be a big shock to us if our earned income dropped immediately to zero. But then, despite being LBYM'ers we are cavalier towards budgeting compared to most people here.
I am just too lazy to keep track of everything, and prefer to just look at the bottom line to see if we are still OK (and if we are not, well, I'll just have to get off my butt and put in some more hours ).
