Seems like a stupid question, but I have not seen any 'date certain' bond funds. I would think there would be a market for them. Have I overlooked them?
Some people buy individual bonds because they plan to hold to maturity. If you hold to maturity, you are assured of full value and the contracted interest rate (barring default). But, you trade that certainty for the diversification of a fund. But, with a fund, I can never know what the NAV will be at any future date.
Even though default risk is very low in quality bonds, I still feel nervous about having less than say ten bonds, just in case one hits the skids.
So, can I buy a bond fund, with say, a hundred issuers of a certain quality range, all due in say 2, 5 or 10 years (a different fund for each target date)? I know they have target funds with a mix of equities and bonds, any with just bonds?
