Dead before money runs out

I have health issues that say 4 years of cancer free, cancer recurs at 6 years, major health problems at 10 years. My doctor's best guess. I have NO heirs.

I have $2M+. It looks like BCBS-IL is handling the medical bills and I'll only be in for $5k per year.

$1M is after-tax and acccessible now.
$1M is IRA and I could do the 72t.

I'm still making money and after the first year have more than I started with.

Any suggestions on how to spend the $2M during my good health years? And as most know I'm not a material boy.

Hi OAP, my suggestion would be to go for experiences instead of "stuff". Lots of travel, guided tours and the like. Maybe some mini-courses to get exposure to things you may never have tried. Hire some people to pamper you.

Or maybe there's some charity that you feel a connection with? You could help them to achieve their goals and leave them a chunk o' change in your will.

Hmmmm, *if you want to die broke, the obvious answer is to make a list of what you've always wanted to do.
If I had the problem, I'd be looking at some of the luxo around the world cruises that carry on for months and months. *

With my luck I'd spend it all only to find out that I've been blessed with another 10-20 years of life. *

Where do you plan to live?* I'd start by not scrimping there.* Not big, not fancy, but if you're in SF - something in the heart of the city - If it was me I’d be buying a nice boat, and a pleasant penthouse apartment.* But I understand the non-materialistic point* - so how about these for starters:*

Those were my exact thoughts. From recent dreaming/research, I seem to recall that 3-4 months on an around-the-world luxury cruise ship would start at around $20000 for a single guy. In other words, you could spend most of the rest of your life on this ship.

You would need to buy a suit or tux for the formal dining though

Re: Dead before money runs out

Thanks guys, I do think it's experiences that will be enjoyable. *I may also get crazy and buy a place in Aspen or Vail if I really start going downhill (pun?). *I have always loved the scenery there.

I do intend to die broke except for a bit to sustain my mother.

I agree with the travel. Take a trip down to New Zealand or a spend a summer traveling through Europe. Lots of places to go see. *8)

Re: Dead before money runs out

Sheryl,
Funny, cause a boat was crossing my mind just as you posted.

And in SF, I'm going to live here.
http://www.nobhillplace.com/

Yeah, a nice big power boat and a condo in downtown SF could burn some cash.

justin,
A cruise with mostly Swedish, Thai and French girls. Wonder where I can book.
Also, I could get a high maintenance babe. *

DOG51,
I did that about 8 years ago. I traveled from Australia to Europe in First Class and spent 48 days in Europe. I only had a backpack and at all the airports, it was like "wait a minute, please to explain how you could afford this ticket". I had a blast.

I really want to get started traveling again. But when you wake up some mornings peeing blood/clots, it slows ya down.

Re: Dead before money runs out

Per the cruise suggestions...

I've been on four cruises now and have enjoyed them all. However I'm always ready to get off when the cruise ends.

Take a couple or *three week-long, or ten day cruises before you sign up for a 4-month around-the-world cruise. Just see how you like cruising before you commit to anything long term. Some people get a bit house-bound on a cruise ship.

Four months on a cruise ship just might slip over from the enjoyable to the not so enjoyable category.

I have a couple of ideas.

Lola. Sherry. Jasmine. Candy. Desiree.

Gimme a few minutes. I'll think of more.

Re: Dead before money runs out

I was thinking of doing something nice for yourself. Maybe twice if you have the energy.

And can we take "Jasmine" off the list of names? I knew I shouldn't have given my daughter a porn name!

Don't let your youth be a barrier to great accomplishments AZ.
If you need additional coaching I'm sure plenty of the 50 somethings can provide assistance.*

If you want to have a little fun...

I've always had a little fantasy (among several others :) of being one of those "mystery givers". One of those people you hear about on the news that just walk up to total strangers who look like they are down on their luck and hand them a $100 bill. Then turn and walk away before they realize what's happened.

I'm not talking about panhandlers, just regular folks...people who might think "finding" $100 was a very major event.

Might be entertaining to do that once in a while. Kinda like the old "Millionaire" TV show only on a much smaller but more frequent scale.

(And yes, I'm fully aware that a lot of skinflints posting on this forum probably fit the "down on their luck" description. So OAP, be sure and ask them if they know anything about used dryer sheets and kayaks before you give them any money. If they start laughing, move on to your next candidate. )
