We can file this under "too much time on my hands", but I wondered if I could make better than a simple guess at what the 1099-OID will say for cusip 912828GX2 (10 year TIPS bond 2.625%), when it's posted in January.

For 2013, 2014, and 2015, the OID has been $270.75, $468.75, and $47.00, respectively.

I don't think it has to do with market value, but you can look it up at https://www.treasurydirect.gov/GA-FI/FedInvest/selectSecurityPriceDate.htm and put in a date, then search for "GX2". It looks like I paid $25,845 at the Treasury Auction (250 units, so 103.38 per hundred) back on 10/15/2007.

I'm almost certain it would be complicated to calculate, and the data to support the calculation not easily available, but I figured, eh, what the heck, I'll ask....maybe it's easier than I think.

When I searched before, I didn't find anything that was custom-made for answering my question, but today's search (after crickets on this thread), I found the answer!!!

TIPS Interest and OID Caculator

Bob, the tipscruncher, has constructed a masterpiece! I validated the sheet by over-typing 2016 with earlier years and the results closely match the OID forms I've received.

For 2016? $469.50
