The link at fatwallet went to a link at State Farm, but to get the 'free' TT you have to have a State Farm account. And once you log into your SF acct, you can click the 'free' TT link that will take you to a special page on the TT website that offers the "Deluxe" online version for free. (I logged into my acct. to check it out)

Thanks Twaddle. I have State Farm homeowners insurance so I was able to register and link over to Intuit for the free Turbotax Online. I am using an accountant for the last time this year but I will mirror the return online and (hopefully) be able to pull up the previous year's return next year.

I just wish there was a good way to import your turbotax online data from last year to regular turbotax.

Just as a heads up for those using the online version that didnt download the regular version, this is a promo for state farm customers and Intuit could unplug the online version and issue a new login protected access for the SF customers.

If you hadnt finished and filed by then, you might have to log in through the regular Intuit turbotaxonline link, at which point it will assess you a charge to use the s/w before you can print or file. Even if you were 99% done and just hadnt finished up.

I didn't happen to notice this thread until after buying TurboTax Basic for $19.95. Actually I suppose that I knew I could get it for free online at Vanguard or State Farm, but just bought it anyway because I felt safer that way for some reason. I am sure it makes no difference, but I just prefer getting it in a box.

You are making me glad that I bought it, though! To me, having TurboTax import data from last year is a huge advantage and really speeds things up. I just did my taxes in less than an hour, and my refund is on its way. Done, done, done.

Now, to figure out what I want to do with the refund. That's a pleasant thought, especially since I am way ahead of my personal savings goals so actually I might choose to spend it this year.

Does this include state tax too? I buy TT at COSTCO every year, I get the stte tax too. I used to file electronically but now I send in the scanable paper return and save the electronic filing fee that Intuit now seems to want to make their money from in addition to TT sales income. But having the TT program I also use it for elderly MIL's return and occasionally for other family members.

According to their website the state program is another $34. Might as well buy Deluxe as it gives you one state in the package.

After signing up I logged out and went to intuit and logged in on the regular site. Worked fine. It would seem unlikely that Intuit would stick it to potential customers by unhooking them half way through the process. That is tantamount to saying, "Get out of here. We don't ever want you as a customer for any of our products." SUre would be for me.

Hmm, thats good info. When I was using the turbotax online last year, a couple of times I forgot to use the link through vanguard and went in through the main intuit site and at the end it tried to charge me for the usage. I logged off and went back in again through the vanguard site and the charges disappeared.

I think someone on the fatwallet thread referenced said they'd been preparing an online return at a cost, but when they linked through the State Farm link provided, the charges got zeroed.

Seemed based on my experience and the fatwallet members that there was a 'pay state' based on where you came from that was enforced on most recent access.

Good news for me if you're experience sticks. I started an online return last night and transferred my data, so that'll remain free even if they change the State Farm linkage. I also downloaded the deluxe and clicked through to the state and downloaded that for free too.

Vanguard gives it for free, but if you can be a weasel, why not?

I didn't realize Vanguard offered a deal till I read it here so I logged on to my account. The download link didn't indicate that the download software was free. Am I missing something? Or is the free version only for Flagship? I am short of that on Vanguard funds.

I have already completed my 2007 taxes using free TT that Vanguard provides Flagship folks. Nice to have it behind me. I owe my uncle a few hundred bucks, but he will not see a cent of it until 4/15.

Its only free for flagship, and I think only the online version. Cheaper for voyager or whatever the next level is down from flagship. Select? Culls?

I went to that link and it had a choice: Free federal and pay for state, or free federal and free state. Had to think about that one -- got the free federal and free state. Thanks!

And then you will get it back a couple of months later since the Senate just passed the GOP/House version of the stimulus package. Unless you make more than the limit.

Well I'm in the process of downloading Deluxe. Doesn't hurt to see if the free version is the real deal. But at the rate it is downloading(dial up), I'm going to be here a while. Maybe by time I'm ready to go to bed it will be done.
