Guardians

John Oliver's topic this week was issues with guardians and the importance of having your paperwork in order as you age. Warning - if you haven't watched his show before, 4-letter words are sprinkled liberally throughout.

Last Week Tonight

Note that we had a thread on this last year if you want more details:

How the Elderly Lose Their Rights

DW & I watched Oliver's segment on guardians the other evening. It is rather stunning the ease with which someone who is a complete stranger can assume control over the lives of the elderly with little or no oversight.

I'm sure it varies with state laws. I'm not sure about WV where we live now, but in MD there were lots of legal hoops to jump through to gain guardianship. At least in MD, there is lots of oversight, including either a personal visit by the judge or court-appointed representative. It is not a process that anyone would describe as "easy".
