help in planing

My friend also recommended the Taurus! It's on my short list, and, yeah, the ability to load .38 was a big plus for plinking at the firing range. Are used gun purchases more trouble than they're worth? I was thinking anybody willing to sell their gun probably didn't like it that much to begin with. I am on a budget, but I know you get what you pay for....

Hello! Interesting how "help in planing" morphed into
a tutorial on guns and ammo. Gotta love this site :)

It is not always true that a private seller doesn't like
the weapon being sold. For example, I sold 2 shotguns
when I quit hunting that I was quite fond of. I sold them because I was no longer using them, they were
expensive, and I can't
stand to have "stuff" laying around here tying up money.

Ed--I'd have to disagree on the .40 S&W.  Many police agencies are using it.  It has more power than  a 9mm and less liabiliity than a .45. The .40 is also easier for the smaller people to shoot as it has little more recoil than the 9.

As far as home defense I think the 9mm is a good sized round.  You might not drop the person on the first shot, but that has advantages.  Most people I've delt with who broke into someone's house were cowards.  The 9mm puts a good hole in them and won't kill them.  They get to deal with the pain and suffering whiel they heal and a scar to constantly remind them why they shouldn't break into someone's house.  The other side is my house is block if I miss the bonehead with anything much bigger than the 9mm I have to worry about riquocet.  My second choice is a 12ga.  The riquocet is not a big concern and it is pretty much point and shoot, leaving the bad guy with lots of little holes.

I use a Smith model 99 at work it's blued and a pain in the gluteus maximus to keep from rusting in Florida's humid environment.  My home defense is a Ruger P89 stainless.  It is a breeze to clean and keep from rusting, but way too heavy to carry at work.

Totally guilty of hijacking here, sorry! I think Ed mentioned safety slugs in regards to home defense, and my friend at work did. I believe they pancake out when they hit a wall, keeps you from killing your neighbor!

...On anther note, closer to the thread, do all the retirees here have they're house paid off, and why or why not? I'm not an expert, but it seems if the key is not to withraw too much money (no more than 4%) when you retire, having no house payment makes it a lot easier to live on the cheap if you have a few down months with your portfolio. It's not sexy, but I think it's a no brainer. Am I way off base here?

That's exactly why we paid ours off. Plus we owed so little on it that there was no tax deduction anyway.

I will try to give my opinion on the questions asked, that is all any of this is no matter who posts, opinions. btw did any one [jg] see bill Richardson tell the press that bush is doing a good job in the middle east this morning? and he was a bill clintonista energy sec.
just goes to show that libs can still learn.
the 1860 azanon is a repro. they did not have stainless in the mid 1800s, so it is a 300$ gun, an original 1860 army, I have one, is worth 2 to 3k. and you don't shoot them even if they are ok to do so. they are worth to much to devalue. and as for cleaning a black powder gun, it is easy, draw a sink of hot soppy water, just as hot as you can stand it, take the wood grips off, disassemble the gun, and wash it up, the black crap wash away very easily, then the hot metal will evaporate the water off, then oil it with a hoppies gun oil and spray it down with wd40, I have heard all the stories about wd hardening on a gun, it crap. wd is mostly fuel oil, it keeps the oxygen in the air from getting on the gun, although ss is very resistant to oxidization.
Laurence, used guns are the way to go, you can find many deals out there, go to guns America.com and look under the gun make you want. you will find all kinds of prices, don't pay more than it is worth, and you can pay a dealer 20$ and they will do a transfer for you. remember to factor in you have appx. 20 in shipping 20 transfer fee, but no tax unless you buy the gun in your home state. so add 40$ to the price of the gun and it should be still about the same as buying it from a dealer.
A Taurus 357 should be apex 175 to 250 used depending. http://www.gunsamerica.com/2540/2540-random-10.htm this is a link that will take you to the Taurus part of g.o.a. I found a couple for 275. but remember you can email the sellers and offer 50$ less. some of these guns have been up for a while and some people are motivated to sell. good luck. and good shooting. gun control is being able to hit your target.
lets, the cal. issue is one that we gun people will argue till the end of time, I know that most fed. and police depts. use the 40 s&w, but I am an old school if it works why change, so I am a9mm 45 auto 44 mag. 3006 and 308 person. I have no problem if someone thinks that a different cal. is better.
If it works for someone great. I have a lot of guns so I try to keep the ammo in a few different category's, this keeps my having to purchase many diff. dies down.
As far as the frangible bullets go, they are a copper case filled with small bb's when they strike any thing the case rips away and the bbs loose energy fast.
I am not sure if this is how they all work, they are coming out with new things all the time.
but the frangs. that I have seen, this is how they are made.
As far as a 12 ga. goes, I will tell you that is the ultimate one shot stop. you can not go wrong with a 12 ga in any shot size for self defense. it is a real man stopper. a little tough to ccw though. lol.
As to the question for owning your own home, I totally agree, why worry about getting 4 to 5% interest from a bank and pay 8% on a home loan.
the argument that you can deduct it form your income, well you still have to pay it in the first place.
Me and the wife were married in 19 and 81, and we bought free and clear a 10x40 mobil home, set if up on my old mans property. fixed it up and lived in it for 2 years. was not much to look at but we owned it. We then moved to fla. and sold it to my grandparents for a summer cabin, bought a home in fla for 12k, worked out a deal to pay 100 a month with no interest.
fixed it up and sold it for 23k,
bought a home in Michigan for 39k on one acre, and did some painting and carpet. lived in it for 4 years and sold it for 44k, bought 10 acres and built new, lived in it for 4 years and sold it for 100k, bought 80 acres and built the same home only a little bigger, and still live in it. the 80 had an old farm stead stone house on it, we remodeled it and rented it for 5 years, then sold it for 98k with 6 acres.
I also put a new 2002 single wide up 14x80 3 bed 1 bath, 2x6 walls, peaked roof with shingles, vinyl window, and vinyl siding, nice little place, and have rented it for 4 years, I will have my money back in one more year. and that place is worth 55k, So if I sell and move I can add appx 150k to my net worth and still have 200k to invest into a new home in never never land.

Edward is primarily intoxicated by the exuberance of his
own verbosity.  I too am coping with this affliction.
OTOH, I agree with a lot of what he has to say.  Thus,
I am compelled to view his posts empathitically and
to support his hypostatizations.

Did you mean "empathetically?"

Old John mostly spells well, and he never uses a word oddly, as I sometimes see even in the WSJ.

He just let this slide through to show us that he doesn't use a spell checker.

Yep, every now and then I insert a test just to see if
y'all are paying attention. Speaking of "inserting",
I used to work with a guy who said (re. an attractive female)
"I'd like to stop by and insert my regards!" Maybe not
original with him, but I never heard it before or since.

Sorry JG. Not funny. I enjoy a subtle joke, but.....................you could do better. :D

your welcome Laurence, just doing my part to put guns in the hands of law abiding Americans..
Did any one read the interview with the female porn star this week? She stated that republican men were hot in the bedroom compared to wimp liberals. No kidding. Just some fodder for thought.

Hey John, did you ever notice that kerry looks like an oompa loompa?

My fav. Kerry tag was "Lurch" which was used a lot
by Rush Limbaugh during the campaign. We should not
be making fun of people's appearance though. We can't
all be pretty like Cut-Throat :)
