How many functioning computers do you have?

Hope 10 is enough for the maximum. I am afraid Wab and () might have more

We have one at home, plus my work laptop I lug around from place to place.

Re: How many functioning computers do you have?

I challenge this forum to beat me.
A look at my Quicken inventory says that as of today I have 134 computers in my garage (about three pallets worth).
I'm estimating about 110 of them working.

About 10 at day job (I write software at mega corp)
for personal use: one laptop for me, one laptop for DW, one desktop server for backups, etc.

Martha,
looks like I'm not very compatible with your polls

Maybe we need a poll for "how many servers do you run in your house" for us computer nerd-types

I actually don't run any servers after running quick calculations:
computer drawing about 100W (confirmed +- 20% with "Watts Up")
electricity about 10c per kWhr => 24c per day to run the server.
That's almost $90 per year, when nowadays I can get free webhosting or free network storage.
But I would ce curious what do you use your servers for if you have them running?

Re: How many functioning computers do you have?

my "server" is really a regular desktop with a lot of storage capacity. I use it to stream video to my other computer in a different room. It also holds most of the files I use frequently, so I can always access them anywhere on my network, no matter which computer I'm on.

Re: How many functioning computers do you have?

DS and I each have one Desktop and one Laptop system for a total of four operational computers - all on a wifi router - Desktops are cabled - Laptops are wifi'ed. *DW wants her own laptop but not till after she fully retires. *No Servers yet...

I also have 4 original Altair computers from 1976 and a 64k Mac from '84 or '85 that was upgraded to a FatMac.

Kill-a-Watt shows 100W on my desktop system and 150W on DS's (3200 AMD Athlon w/21" CRT monitor). I kinda cringe thinking about adding one or more server systems - the subject has come up.

Re: How many functioning computers do you have?

Depending on what you call 'computer', I have somewhere between 12, maybe 20, maybe 25. Christ, I think I have five working laptops and thats after finally throwing out the 386 and 486 ones when I moved.

I used to run three servers in my old mcmansion. Not really much need to solve the problem of printing or accessing files from a 5 minute walk away in the new, smaller place

Yep, what's a computer: oven, microwave, fridge, playstation, gamecube, TVs, clocks, thermostats, ipod, gps, ...

As for more than 10 computers, just vote multiple times until you get there.

Re: How many functioning computers do you have?

I'm thinking more like MSN companions, Audrey's and that ilk in the second tier, and in the third tier tivo's and windows CE type machines in the third. Heck, those third tier machines have more processing power, memory and storage than the average PC had just 5-6 years ago...

Lots of things. Attached to the web I have:
email server
webserver
ssh (secure shell: login from work, or transfer files to/from work or other places)

For internal use I use it for:
fileserver (i.e. all other computers grab data off the server so that I only have to backup one machine)
I also run a music server at home, so I can stream music to any laptop or equipped device (i.e. slimp3 audio player)

They key advantage to running your own server is that disk space is cheap. You can dump tons and tons of pictures without hitting any limits. And DSL is 1 mbps upload these days so it's not too painful on the other end.

Re: How many functioning computers do you have?

Wow, I only have 4 computers at home running at the moment? I've been slacking. One is acting as a firewall/DHCP server/traffic control server, one is a file/web/email server, one is my latest PC and another is my 2nd latest PC but is starting to get used for hosting virtual servers using Xen.

OH! 5! I have a 5th PC ready to fire up: a server. Remembered too late for the poll. I keep it off because it's a loud rackmount and I moved its stuff onto a hosted VPS.

sailor, "how many servers" getest complicated! Count by processors, services, boxes or virtual servers. (And how would you count vservers or Sun's process separator thingy.)

Re: How many functioning computers do you have?

I am using the gross definition of "functional" meaning that they work and not that they are used frequently.

With that out of the way I can think of 7 in the house. I am not a computer geek and don't work in IT.

I guess I just don't like throwing stuff away.

Four of them are actually used on a more or less daily basis. Four are laptops and the other three desk tops that are in different rooms and are doing different jobs. One being semi-retired but works for grandkids games.

I have parts for a couple more but I don't consider them functional so I didn't count them.

I gotta get rid of some of this stuff someday. I have 4 printers too but only use two of them. :

Re: How many functioning computers do you have?

Hey, who's the other geek with more than 134?

I'm afraid to count.

I used to be a pack rat.* But then some of my computers became old enough to reach collectible status, and that emancipated me from my guilt.

Guilt-free accumulation leads to LARGE numbers.

But even ignoring the pathologically LARGE numbers, we probably have a dozen that are in pretty frequent use, and I think 7 are in daily use.

So, umm, does anybody need a computer?* *Come by for a visit, and take one of these damn computers home with you.* *No, not that one.* *I'll kill you if you touch *that* one!

(But we only have a couple of TVs, and I haven't watched TV in, gawd, 6 months?* Except to accidentally blow one of them up by driving it with a high-rez computer signal.)

Re: How many functioning computers do you have?

One - an old Think pad with a Pentium lll. I miss my webtv.

Step daughter in spare room - has a custom job built by her son with a bunch of bells a whistles - which I can't/won't touch.

heh heh heh

So I should upgrade to ? what? Now that I'm unfrugal.

I have a D link wireless connection to her - if I'm reading the label on the box correctly.

Prefer a non geek - semi idiot proof model.

heh heh heh
