My XP desktop recently died and I upgraded to Windows 7. There was no driver for my old Dell multifunction printer/scanner. But I found some generic scanner driver/app built into Win7 that works fine. The printer part is broken so I didn't bother searching for driver updates. My bigger problem was my workhorse ancient HP Laserjet 4N. I have two of these things excessed from DW's office and I don't want to dump them - they are great. There is no driver in Win 7 so I went to HPs site. But HP no longer provides them for downloading - they say MS incorporates them in Win7. I searched everywhere to no avail. Luckily HP drivers are very backward compatible so I selected the oldest sounding driver in Win 7 and it works fine. Whew!

DANGER, DANGER!!! I was scanning documents with text recognition enabled until I noticed that sometimes the text recognition was imperfect, and the resulting PDF file contained perfect versions of the incorrectly recognized characters, with no remnant of the original correct characters!

So I might scan something like: "Total $1,234.56" and the PDF might read "Total SI.Z34.S6" to use a made up extreme example. I would far rather have a fuzzy photocopy style image than a visually crisp but incorrect PDF of my records.
