International money transfer

A while back we were talking about ways to get money to yourself, or someone else, overseas. As I remember, we talked about Western Union, USPS, PayPal, and Xoom.

I just learned of a new one, PeerTransfer.

Maybe this thread: What is the safest easiest way to get cash transferred?
Or this one: Losing everything while traveling, whats your plan

PeerTransfer appears to be a new startup out of MIT:
Quote:
The idea is to match up the transactions going between two countries—money flowing from the U.S. to the U.K. and vice versa, for example—so as to figure out the net flow between customers, and to keep the money effectively moving only within each country. That way customers save money on international transfer fees and bad exchange rates.
Sounds good, but the proof is in the pudding...next time I need to get money out of the country (hmm, never needed to before, probably never will), I'll check their rates.

Can't you just carry a reloadable prepaid visa or mastercard and if the balance goes down, reload that and call it done?

As I remember, we were talking about how to get money to yourself if everything was stolen, including your passport and all your cards.
