I especially love the 'Mothers Day' strategy, although my mother has her reservations

Wow, he's a little over the top. Avoid Mother's Day? I think not! When she was alive I had no qualms about springing for a card.

I like getting my nickel's worth, I like financial independence, but I don't want to be one of those people who lives like a pauper and dies with $2 million in the basement either.
