Medicare and S.S. Disability - Civil Service

Age 52 , 25 years of s.s. covered earnings ending in 2001, 11 years civil service, with medicare tax ded, but no s.s. deductions. Looking at the s.s. statement , I would not get s.s. disability if disabled before I can draw s.s. benefits. Not sure about medicare if disabled. What I see on the medicare and s.s. websites says to get medicare before 65, you must be on s.s. disability.

I have been paying medicare tax on every paycheck. of every job and self employemnt going back to 1976, including the last 11 years under civil service. If I became disabled , does the medicare system have another test to qualify , other than s.s. disability ststus ?

If your SSD (Social Security Disability) claim is approved - usually a long process in most cases, you will be able to get Medicare in 2 years (24 months) after approval.

There are other ways way of getting Medicare before the age of 65, due to conditions as stated in the following, beyond the standard SSD process:

Medicare

Medicare is only medical insurance, SS has a disability program for those qualified before you would be otherwise entitled to draw benefits.

Your civil service employment must be for a State because Federal employees were put into SS years ago. You need to contact your State personnel office to determine if they have disability coverage and a health insurance program for your circumstances.

There is a currency requirement for getting SSDI. You must have so many credits in a designated time period leading up to the time you become disabled. Because OP hasn't been paying into SS recently, he doesn't qualify for SSDI. Whether he can get Medicare or not, I don't know. I would think whatever government entity he works for, has their own provision for disability and associated healthcare.

Dreamer , that is good shooting ! Reading the provisions for state and local gov. employees ,it looks like I would be covered in the same manner as a federal employee. Same 24 mo. period of disability to qualify.

Covered for Medicare only before age 65 , without s.s. disability that is.
