Really - at one time I did own a house with avocado green appliances. And a shag rug in the family room.
When I purchased my house in 1999 it came with appliances, including a washing machine (harvest gold) and a stove (avocado green). Both were perfectly functional, and my guess is they were original to the house, which was built in 1971. I replaced them a couple of years later.

When I asked the realtor why all the bedroom doors in the house had such a large gap between the bottom of the door and the floor, he explained it was because they had to close over the shag carpeting which had been ripped up when the house was put on the market.

The harvest gold and avocado green were hideous colors, but I'd be willing to bet my nice white appliances which replaced them won't last 30 years!

Believe it or not, many of those old, colored appliances had removable panels in case you wanted another color. Some even came with a few different colored panels stacked together.

They are back as Golden Mist ad Mint Julep. Retro is cool now:

Retro kitchen colors like harvest gold, avocado, poppy and orange - from Viking - Retro Renovation

Maybe it's just my computer, but the first two colors don't appear to be nearly as awful as the old colors (although I think the orange and red are hideous).

LOL - my 2002 Ford Explorer had an exterior color of "Harvest Gold"! Never knew that was originally an appliance color!

Some of the local casinos have morning poker tournaments that fall within that price range; Oceans11's 'buy-in' is $30. A couple of hours spent chatting with mostly agreeable people, a chance to exercise your brain; and sometimes, you get to go home with a profit!

MY <$40 pleasure happens when my local beer distributor puts the craft beer on sale, for various reasons. Sometimes it is just getting old and there is some rule about selling old beer (maybe the brewer insists they sell it before it's too old). And sometimes I think just not enough people like the particular style, or the brewer is unknown, or the container is ugly, whatever.

But the result is that I can get $40 cases of craft beer for $20 to $25 every now and then. And I do stock up.

Yes, very much like that only more yellow and some black than orange. The walls were yellow and I think the curtains were too.

Actually going into the one of the Villages squares for dinner and free concert is kind of fun and cheap.

There are about a dozen golf courses within 20 minutes where the greens fees are less than $25, and half of them my wife and I can play together for less than $40 total.

In 1990 I bought a house with 1980s vintage beige appliances. In 1994 I gutted and renovated the kitchen, but kept the old appliances, which were functioning perfectly. My colour scheme was French Country (white cabinets with blue ceramic knobs, blue and white tile backsplash, blue laminate counters, original oak floors) so I wanted white appliances. The dishwasher was the easiest: just switch to the white front panel. The fridge and stove I had repainted. The result was awesome. I did replace the dishwasher and fridge about 10 years later when they died of natural causes. However the stove was still going strong when I sold the house in 2011.

My mom still has an avocado green Maytag dishwasher (on casters so it can be wheeled closer to the sink if necessary to attach the supply hose which clamps onto the kitchen faucet). Bought in 1972 when we moved into a new house. Has been moved to newly purchased homes 3 times. Still works great and don't ever remember seeing or hearing of the Maytag man paying it a visit.
