Hey, Kumquat, you are so right!

We are all free to make our own choices.

Pay your money and take your pick.

BTW who do you mean by self-confessed advisers? Name names, please. Hey dude (or dudette, who knows these days, on the net) , you mentioned it first.

Do you imply that all advisers are bad people? Just askin'?
Does anybody reading this imply that all advisers are bad people?

It's not that they are bad people. You just have to be diligent when doing business with a salesperson. I was in sales for 35 years and we were all trying to make a living. It's not that the product isn't going to do what the salesperson says it's just that you can be steered toward something that is better for the person selling it.
"buyer beware" should be used when buying a product.

Gee, Kumquat, I'm really glad you appreciate the time I spend as a moderator here on the forum.

Rustward, thanks very much for your sensible commentary. But I've seen all the tools we've got here in our ER.org workshop and you might be wasting your breath.

Bitterness turns the world a different color, doesn't it? I had a plumber who managed to steal about $10k worth of materials from our jobsite when I was GC on our home building project. I have to say that I didn't much care for plumbers for a good long time, until I realized that I was doing a disservice, not just to the honest plumbers, but my own, usually sunny, outlook.

I let go of my losses and gained a fresh new view of the construction arts. I may still do my own plumbing, but I don't automatically think that all plumbers are thieves.

Sorry, you'll have to read the posts.

Not at all, never said that.

I do feel, like many others here, that the compensation model could use a bit of work. But, it's your money, spend it any way you like.

We have a friend who was dying to put us in touch with his advisor five years ago--friend actually said to us, "this guy's getting me 22 percent returns--he takes more risk with my kids so they're getting 24 percent." (We didn't get in touch with him. And wonder how our friend's done financially these past three years, but who knows what the reality is even with that friend's FA.)

But then I remember we probably know a lot of people with much more complicated financial lives than ours who use FAs and most of them never talk about anything to do with money, including their FAs, who are probably very good. The people who post here imho fall into this second category of FA and most of them don't bring up their profession very often. Since we don't use an FA, the compensation doesn't bother me (but then, I'm trying to figure out how this little dental procedure I'm having done this month is taking a total of about 2 hours and costing us several large ones, so don't ask me what compensation for anyone should be!).

As far as the plumber goes, I am certainly not bitter and hold nothing against him, at least not at a personal level. And I can't really argue with his pricing plan because I have never been a plumber and know nothing about the business. But if I were him, I would not have disclosed that part of the business model to a "client".

And as for my breath, I am not trying to convince anybody to do or not do anything (and to myself I wish everybody else would act the same). Just pointing out that "broad brush" that may be valid a lot of the time, but not all the time.

Well, I do look at other terms, on a regular basis.

I suppose my favorite color is the wrong choice, too. OK.

You're making an assumption that they have the same goal (ER) that you most of us here do? Some folks love to w*rk and don't want to stop...others don't want to downsize, spend less, or enjoy more quality time with their trophy spouses...
