Good point on UM's Target Retirement 2015 (can't beat your components), so I'll skip LifeStrategy Moderate growth and submit Wellington! VWELX

Re: Pick your top Vanguard fund for the year

My best performer is VDE.

Tks to this forum, I have moved a large chunk over to various Vanguard funds and this has been a nice improvement since I've (had time in ER) and been learning about managing my own portfolio/money.

I am still with my tax advisor/family friend, broker but learning more about this stock market thing. The forum has been a HUGE resource. I am gaining more confidence.

HELP QUESTION:

I have an AIM fund (CSTGX) that has dipped significantly after 2000 and just now have been taking a closer look at it.
I noticed they have not paid ANY dividends in over 5 years and realize the funds have been just sitting there, doing nothing. I asked the broker to look into it and he just suggested to move it (surprise) to one of his American funds (AMECX)
that I also have and has performed well. I have previously told him I wanted to go with all Vanquard funds due to no front load and low expense ratios. (not to mention it appears AIM is being sued for securities fraud...anybody know more about this)

I feel I need to cut and run away from AIM but don't want to do anything foolish.

Thanks for your input.

Re: Pick your top Vanguard fund for the year

I think it might be just as foolish to hold AIM funds when you can do much better elsewhere.

Sorry L, late entry on the spreadsheet. I guess you are in the middle of the pack.

When you have that kind of return in one year do you sell? Or just "rebalance" a bit? I sure would be tempted to dump it.

Precious metals outperformed Emerging markets by ~5%. Gonzo wins?!

It is closed right now though, so I'm tempted to proclaim victory myself with my Emerging mkts pick.

Wow, VG REIT index went up 35.07% in 2006. Wellington, my choice for this thread, went up "only" 14.93%.

BMJ, I've been in the Vanguard REIT Index for 3 years. Never wavered in spite of some recommendations to get out. It's nearly doubled my investment. It's got to be the top fund for 2006.

Isn't Wellington a balanced fund?

If so then I suspect that the probability that Wellington will be the best performer in any give year is small. Lower than most of the other funds.

If stocks out perform then the equity funds beat it. If bonds out perform then the bond funds beat it. Either way it is in the middle.

Only way it can out perform is by adding alpha in stocks or bonds or both and overcoming an AA of ~30-60% in the lower performing component has to be incredibly rare.

Not saying it is a bad fund, quite the opposite in fact, but I don't think it has enough volatility (high beta) to be the best performer.

I've been in for about two years. When I bought people thought it was run up and were talking about getting out.

For me it wasn't a timing move but a diversification for my long-term strategy. I expected to take a hit but had sworn off of any attempts to time the market. But I still feel good that it kept shooting up anyway.

What's even better is I accidentally bought too much (13% of my port instead of the planned 10%) and didn't fix it for over a year due to the redemption fee.

I rebalanced a couple of months or so ago, so it's back at the planned 10%, but for what it's worth it was by no means a market timing judgment...it was a periodic rebalance.
