That was DHs idea too. That and a small bungalow at the Jersey shore, similar to the one his extended family had until recently. He grinned when I said we could afford a boat here (San Diego) *and* at the Jersey shore. So 2 boats for us. Nothing fancy... just something trailerable - like his old 19' bayliner.

1) disconnect the phone
2) move during the night
3) charter a yacht, someplace warm...
4) turn off cell phones
5) help those I choose in the way I choose after much thought.
6) sit in the sun, owning nothing
7) fish with a spinning rod at a dock with bait, a cooler and a lawn chair.
8) fish on a chartered 60 ft Bertram in the Gulf Stream
9) travel the US and camp in a new 30ft $130k airstream towed by a loaded $80k 2016 diesel ford 350 and cook sausage in the outdoor grill. When tired of it return it.
10) don't tell the relatives...
An 89ft oyster sailboat fully fitted roughly $8.5 mil

$1.3B is getting into space ship money.
Figure $500M after taxes if you take the lump sum.
Set aside $100M for basic living expenses and $200M for construction costs and you would have enough for two LEO launches using SpaceX (maybe cheaper when they perfect their vehicle).
Nobody will remember Bubba Joe Smith in 20 years, even if he won the powerball and bought a boat. Everyone would remember the first private citizen to have their own space station.

It would be cool to win a million or two. I could come up with plenty of fun ways to spend that. Half a billion, however, is so far outside the realm of reality that I can't imagine any possible way to spend it.
A few weeks ago my husband played tennis with a hedge fund guy at the HFG's "vacation" house in Rancho Santa Fe. It was so over the top with a guest house bigger than our overly large, fancy house and restaurant type walk-in refrigerators that he couldn't stop talking about it for days. I can't imagine having that kind of stuff. It would be useless to me and a complete waste. HFG, however, grew up in that kind of money so I guess it seems normal to him.
My dogs would spend the money on a dog door.

Winning a Billion dollars ... RUN and HIDE for a couple of months ... live in a big mega-yacht or hide in a remote European Alps or Scottish island where relatives, friends, co-workers can't reach you. Put it in a Trust and have a lawyer and accountant deal with people asking for money, or let them handle distribution to your favorite charity.

Ps who says you need to spend it on stuff.. There is an alternative
- Help someone
- travel
- rent and live when and where you want.
I hate "stuff" . I wonder if the ultimate winners will be happy I a year or two. I have had people tell me "you don't want to win too much". You know the rich commit the really big sins.

If I win I'm still going to buy a new truck and think about the rest. Well, maybe I'd buy a pony too! The ticket money I spent for Saturday's drawing totaled $7. Will probably go in with people from work if they get tickets again and I'd buy 2 ticket for myself and husband again. So that's another $7. for a total of $14. That's cheap fun!

I'm confused by the $7. Here the tickets are $2 each.

The problem you have is that you have to buy each number individually.... they do not allow a bulk buy... think how long that would take!!!
Then you have the problem of someone else matching the numbers so you only get half.... now you have lost a hundred mill or so....

I never play. DM called me and was looking for me to provider her the winner numbers. I didn't even know where to look at first. Eventually found the powerball site and then ended up reading the rules and the payout conditions.
I feel a bit more closely bonded to the mass culture now.

Gauss, I know how you feel! That's exactly how I felt last night when DH went online to look up the numbers.
Our roommate is apprenticing in a small town barbershop that sells tickets. I've been fascinated by his stories of the folks coming in to buy tickets. Including all of the girls, one by one, who came in from the bank next door, followed by their boss! I'll admit I told him to buy us $10 worth yesterday, just because it was cheap entertainment. And to at last feel like a part of the GP! (General Public)

I considered buying a ticket yesterday but forgot, honestly. Now I'll buy a ticket or two for sure, as it is fun to think about what I would do with all that money. No estates or yachts for me, but I would buy a condo in San Francisco (Pacific Heights or Cole Valley) take over the educational costs for all nieces and nephews, and add some luxury touches to our ongoing remodel.
I would keep a fund of several million to buy and fix up houses, just for fun.
First class travel all the way, though I probably wouldn't do all that that much of it. A couple weeks in France to start with, stopping in NYC to see a few plays and dine in some fine establishments on my way back to California.
Then I would research and choose two or three areas for advocacy and philanthropy. They would get most of the money after the extended family is provided for.

Your not the one that's confused. Think I even used the same "math" in another post. The group buy was $5 per person and I bought 1 ticket for my husband and myself. Think I wrote "2" tickets for my personal buy. All the high figures are getting me confused.....can you imagine how I'd manage if I won the lottery. I don't buy lottery tickets often and this time I asked for super bowl tickets. See, it's a pattern of confusion!
I got 1 free ticket today from a neighbor for this coming Wednesday. I gave him some home made bread.

I apologize that I don't remember the particulars but you'll get the gist. Here in Iowa, names of winners must be released but when a group of Quaker Oats employees won the lottery they immediately hired a lawyer who told the lottery that he intended to sue to keep the names of the winners private (he may have actually filed some type of paperwork with the court?). I think they had 30 days or so to file suit and the lottery was barred from releasing the names until it was decided. The deadline for filing a suit came and went without a lawsuit being filed, so the lottery released the names.
Wasn't that ingenious!? They had all of their affairs in order before anyone knew who had won.
