Excuse my jaded attitude, but if I had a nickel for every such claim, I'd have ER'd long ago. Still, we can hope and if that's what puts me out of a job, bring it on.

As my Pharmacy instructor in medical school put it:

"Always use a drug when it first comes out - that is when it is most efficacious and has the fewest side effects"

Exactly. And it must be good since it costs 12 times the price of the nearest me-too drug competitor.

Yet for all of it there are just enough true breakthroughs that hope rings eternal. Like golf.

Yes - even though I won't start reaping the benefits for a couple of months, it feels great just to have the decision made and "public."

Thanks for the good wishes.

Congratulations Rich. Talk about exciting news-I would have never thought of getting a part-time job in Las Vegas, when I lived in FL. That is absolutely wonderful that you will be able to spend more time with both of your children and your grandchildren.

We just helped with the move of our daughter and her family to CA. Unfortunately, our only grandchild went with them. It would be wonderful to find a job that allowed me to do the same.

Anyway, congrats to you and I am sure that you will be a great asset to your new employer, since you seem like such a great, caring doctor.

Thanks, Dreamer.

Do you have just the one daughter? How far are they now that she has moved to CA?

I can certainly see how cutting to one week a month would be attractive. Makes the transition to full retirement a pretty easy thing to do. Plus someone with Rich's expertise, it would almost be a waste not work a little. But a bean counter like myself? I found my niche in life, full time bum status.

Best of luck with your new schedule.

I also have a son who is 31 yrs old and lives in our town. He has never been married and has no children. We love him very much. His lifestyle is very different from my daughter's lifestyle. He has lived with two brothers for several years and they have company that come visit from all over. They know people in several bands and he goes to lots of parties, athletic events and concerts. He is very social. (Actually, his lifestyle is very similar to what our lifestyle was before I had him at age 25.) However, he has been dating a very nice lady for 3 yrs and she wants them to move in together, along with her soon to be 12 yr old son, as soon as she graduates from college in May. He told me that he thinks he will move to a place with them, but is not completely thrilled by it. He says that he has been spoiled by being able to do whatever he wants to do, when he is not working. He does not visit all that often, due to working and his life with his friends. I have only visited him probably about 3-4 times at his place, since he left home around 19 or 20. Since he lives with 2 other people, I do not want to intrude.

My daughter's spouse practically lived at our house his senior yr of high school. After they were married, he would drive from our house in Morgantown WV to Bethesda Naval Hospital MD and work either 2 or 3 12 hr shifts that week and then drive back to our house. My DD had a scholarship that paid for her college in WV. After she had her DD, they moved together as a family to Bethesda for 8 months. Even when my DD lived in MD, her and her baby came back home to visit quite a bit. My sister said they were wasting their money paying rent, when she was back home so much. She just turned 21 last month. Her DH went to TX for 3 months for training for a specialty, so DD and her DD moved back to our house again in 06/09.

I love both of my children very much, but I am very close to my DD and her family, since we have spent so much time together. My DD and I have a lot of things in common also. My granddaughter thinks of me as a second mommy. She has lived with us so much and I have helped care for her as if she were my own child. I would also watch her whenever my DD needed to go to MD or to TX to see her DH.

In other words, I am having to adjust being from WV to CA away from them! Sorry, for such a long reply.

We're staying in Tampa in any case, so the only casino in sight is the Seminole Casino at the Hard Rock. We've never set foot in the place.

We're hoping that the real estate market revs up, so the only thing she has to count are commissions. Ain't so at the moment, unfortunately.

Rich, now that you are in the single digits, how about a daily update on how things are going? I suspect many here who look forward to their own big day will get a vicarious thrill from a description of the event seen through your eyes.

Yes!! My countdown was REWahoo's idea too, and I got a big kick out of doing it. It was fun to share my excitement and experiences with other forum members.

Not sure I have much that would be of interest to others, but it would be good occupational therapy, so here's where it's at on day -7, in no particular order...

After my last post about "feeling the chill..." well, the "chill is gone" and the "thrill is on." There is a party being mentioned but it sounds like that will await my total and final departure which could be months away (open-ended at 2 days a week, to a point).

Trips are planned - one to kids in San Fran, another to visit friends relaxing in Naples, and another to a meeting in Toronto. Other kids will get us on Memorial Day. Gotta get the towing installed on the RV then off we go somewhere or other.

I've got the itch to rearrange my home office/cave. I talked the DW into letting me move my favorite easy chair into the cave so I can keep my napping skills in shape. No new toys on the list yet, unless you count a cell phone.

I continue to be cornered by colleagues who wonder how this can be. Befuddled. I don't say much. Today I voluntarily met with an employer-sponsored "retirement counsellor." My goal was a sanity check of my ER plans. Not helpful, but reassuring. Me: "Any last minute suggestions before I take the plunge?" Him: "Just have fun." OK.

My 36 year-old daughter told me on the phone last night that she was proud of me.
