Checked my months end accounts. Realized we have earned back what we took out at the beginning of the year! Not even retired one full year yet, but that was a nice eye opener. I know what was gained can be lost, but for now I am happy. We do have pensions, but this was a big spend year for us, as we had anticipated and planned for. (retirement celebration trips and DD wedding)
Have leveraged down to between 50/50 and 60/40 on our accounts from about 90/10.

At the risk of jinxing myself by posting this, as of yesterday we've earned back everything we've taken out since retiring 12+ years ago.

Nice.
I hope I will be able to say the same in the not too distant future.

This thread is sounding unfortunately like wh**. I'm plugging my ears and singing la la la la... I can't hear you.

Uh, you may come to regret that approach .. :)

Yesterday my net worth hit $3 million. I'm sure it's retreated today. Good thing I didn't go out and spend it!

Broke 1 million in NW this week. ~700k of that in 401k/ira's.

Next milestone of course is to attain that in retirement accounts alone.

Hoping I can double to 1.4 by the time I reach 50 (currently 46). Not sure how feasible that is... but fingers crossed.

Nice work - hope you can attain your goals!

FI?

I suppose I can now consider DW and myself FI as we've now amassed over 27 times our expenses. DW plans to work for another five years. I, however, have been struggling with the decision to RE now at age 50 (soon to be 51).

Whatever I decide, though, I think we're at the point now where if I lost my job we won't panic (my wife's job is fairly secure). I believe the stash we now have is called F. U. money and, boy, does it feel good.

Just to add my FIRE Milestone... DW and I just hit 47 X annual expenses. Jan 2018, I am pulling the trigger. I am 41.

First payday I didn't get a paycheck in 31+ years. FIRE'ed (actually was laid off a month before I was going to retire) in Jan and severance just ran out. Flying on DW's paycheck for 3-4 more years and hopefully shouldn't have to touch the portfolio until she retires.

DW and I just passed the 450k mark since our last post 3 months ago. That's an increase of 50k! I'm getting pumped! Let's keep this going!

Quick update, due to market gains and a steady savings rate DW and I just surpassed the 500k threshold in cash/assets! Thank you all for the great advise and motivational comments, I’ve gained so much since I’ve joined!

My brother, who has been two years ahead of me for pretty much every big transition in life---birth, school, marriage, kids---has just told his organization that 30Jun2018 will be his last day. I don't know if I can wait 2.5 more years.

Very impressive. Comparing apples to apples, I doubled 2x my net worth in the past 19months, of that I doubled 2x my investments in the past 17months at over 1/4 your scale so it looks like we are neck and neck as I see you accomplished that feat in the past 20months. Being within 30 days is impressive it'd be interesting to see your save rate vs mine and your AA. 77% of my assets are invested vs your 73%. We are very similar just on different scales.

My LBYM lifestyle has allowed me to aggressively save and most importantly invest, I pay little to no interest and as some incredibly smart ER forum member taught me, I "never pay retail". Just scored 30% discount on a pack of 8 oil changes. Getting my oil changed for less than $12/semi synth and less than $30 for my v8 fully synth. Plus they toss in a cpl free tire rotates, propane fill and free wash and .10c gas every service. Makes owning these cars less of a money pit. We put 35k on a year so 7-8 oil changes is perfect for the next year.

I own a few businesses and income property so that is helping as well with some occasional passive income and tax harvesting. I guess I don't really include the rental in my figures, that's the DS college fund.

Boost your Reported SSI... save aggressively over the next 2 years to give yourself a 20-40% better quality of retirement and survive any downside risk by being employed....seems like little bro might be a little jealous in the long run?

I kinda sabotaged my upcoming milestone, probably only temporarily.

I have been nearing the $1.5M mark in investments for some time, thanks mostly to the recent run-up in the markets. I would have hit it the other day if I hadn't paid my latest credit card bill last Thursday (11/2). It isn't due for another 2 weeks but it was for 2 expensive products or services obtained back in May and September. Market gains at the end of the week put me at $1.4995M, so if I hadn't paid the $1,100 CC bill I would be over $1.5M now.

Market gains probably will put me over $1.5M in the next few weeks. I have a $200 check I haven't deposited, either. And I have lots of dividend and cap gain distributions coming up at the end of hits month and in December, so I'll be posting again here soon about finally breaking the $1.5M mark sooner or later.

34 male, 33 female

Added our accounts up over the weekend. Total is $784,000 between all accounts...not counting home in equation. Guess the next real milestone will be 1 million.

Congrats, very impressive @ that age!

Career as a Bond Proxy

Grateful to have achieved the two comma club invested and $1,300,000 NetWorth ahead of plan! January 2019 original FIRE date feels real for the first time, then I'll "54 and change"...everything. AA: 95/5/0

Four months later, + $100,000

When I last posted here, I received a thoughtful reply to examine my AA. I think of my career (human capital) as a bond proxy, after all it pays a regular and large "dividend" every payday. So up to the day before I give notice, I will stay near 100% equities. I feel my $400,000 increase in 17 months validates, for me at least, the value of looking at it that way. As several others here have pointed out, sequence of returns risk cuts both ways, and not being fully in the market pre-RE is risky in it's own way. Happy thanksgiving to all!

We hit our FIRE "number" today (yeah :)). 27x annual expenses. Problem is, we're 5 years too early :)().

When I originally calculated our FIRE number several years back it was under the assumption that it'd take longer, we'd be older, the kids would be out of the house and the mortgage would be paid off. As it is, kids are still in high school and we're still a few years from owning the house free and clear. I guess my "number" isn't really my "number".

Has anyone else had to reevaluate FIRE based on better than anticipated portfolio performance?
