social security retirement disability - survivor's benefits

DW is on retirement disability- 31K/yr
DW social security@ age 66: 19.8K
DW survivor benefit: 22.6K

My social security@ age 66: 29K
My survivor benefit: 28.3K

It's my understanding that DW will continue to receive retirement disability amount even after she reaches FRA at age 66. Is this correct?

I didn't understand the survivor's portion.
If I die first will DW continue to receive retirement disability amount +
my survivor benefit (28.3K) or does she receive disability amount +her soc security amount (19.8K @ age 66) + my survivor benefit (28.3K)?

Conversely, if DW goes first would I receive:
1. My ss @ age 66 or DW survivor amount (whichever is greater) or
2. My ss@ age 66 (29K)+ DW survivor amount (22.6K)

I would appreciate any insights or thoughts. Thanks

reviewing the ss website, it appears your surviving spouse would be eligible to receive benefits under one program, either her own disability payments or retirement benefits but not both. It states that the ss admin will select the one program that pays the most whether based on your earnings or hers but not both. Just my amateur opinion.

Thanks for the info.

I probably have to call ss to find out for sure. I try to read their website but it's sometimes confusing.

My interpretation of your response is that retirement disability is one program (pot#1) and ss for an individual/survivor benefits are a separate program (pot#2). So ss decides if you get an amount either from pot#1 or pot#2. If pot#2 is chosen then you receive EITHER the individual benefit amount or the survivor benefit amount (probably whichever is the greater amount) but not both.

Am I reading your response corrrectly?

I'm no expert either, but I believe that's the case.

I found "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Social Security and Medicare" to be far more helpful than the title would imply...

Spring 2020: my daughter and I wrote “Raising Your Money-Savvy Family For Next-Generation Financial Independence.”
Author of the book written on "The Military Guide to Financial Independence and Retirement."

I don't spend much time here— please send a PM.
