SS and RR from seperate spouses?

my sister got remarried this weekend, after the age of 60.

Should her ex die before she does, she would bump up to his SS.(even remarried as she did so after age 60)

New DH has a RR pension. So the question is: Should her current spouse and her ex die before she does, can she get SS from the first and RR from second if those amounts are larger than her SS? Her SS will be larger than 50% of either, but not as large the men.

LOL She did marry a really nice guy, and is about as oblivious to anything money as can be. But her new DH asked me about it over the weekend and is getting close to taking SS or RR and want to know what is best for her. He has nothing to gain from her financially, so we know he married for love! ;-)

The retired RR worker and spouse should stop into his local RR Retirement office, they can help determine what works best for them. RR pensions come in two parts, one the equivalent of social security the other is an annuity. The only reason I know this is that my brother is a RR retiree and I just prepared his taxes. I THINK the social security portion works the same as it does for other couples covered by social security. The annuity portion could be tricky as it may depend on whether or not the RR retiree designated a beneficiary when retiring and whether or not the beneficiary is still living - rather like CSRS.

They have to be married for at least 9 months before she would be eligible for Survivor benefit with SS. After 1 year of marriage (assuming they remain married) she would be eligible for spousal benefits.
