ssa.gov add extra security
So, logged into ssa.gov to get yearly statement and they say you can answer a financial question such as last digits of a credit card, or info from tax statement. Then they mail you a letter that you need to add extra security. It then states log-in method will not change. So, how does this add extra security.
Also, has anyone here done this?

I just logged in and was not asked for anything extra. Just the same old standard thing is this your phone number and sent me a text with numbers to enter. You might be able to choose if you want an email or phone be used to verify your identity. Maybe this is a first time setting it up thing for you.

Might be the first chance they had to set up the secondary security. Once you have it set up, it's easy.

everyone is required to have 2 factor identification through email or phone. This is an optional thing in addition to that. Just don't understand the purpose of it, or what it does.

The following quote from the SS website is what i'm asking about.
(What is extra security?
Extra security is an added layer of protection for your account. If you would like to add extra security, you must answer a financial verification question. Adding extra security does not change the way that you sign in to your account. You must still sign in with your username, password, and a unique security code we will provide each time you sign in.
If the following statements are true for you, the extra security is an option for you:
I am comfortable answering an identity verification question online.
I am comfortable answering a financial verification question online.)
It then goes on to say if you answer these question, they will send you an upgrade code to your home address, and tell you what other steps to take to add this additional security

When DW and I signed up we had to go thru that process just to get access. We had to unfreeze our crediti to accomplish it - otherwise no online account. This sounds like something in addition to the original signup process but still requiring you to lift a credit freeze. With the bureaus dropping pins it might be impossible to get your credit freeze lifted. Then SS might lock you out of your account because you clicked "sure give me added security."

thanks for this response. Looking at ssa.gov again it also says (You can upgrade to extra security or disable it at any time. Adding extra security does not change the way that you sign in to your account. You must still sign in with your username, password, and a unique security code we will provide each time you sign). Does adding this extra security create a pin for your account as an additional safety measure? If anyone one who has this extra security activated would love to understand how it makes account safer.
