As others have suggested consulting or temporary controller/CFO work could be a good route.
This is what I did after deciding to leave public accounting and not having found the next job I wanted to try. I left on good terms and got several referrals from my prior partners on consulting projects. This allowed me to make a bit of side money at a higher rate per hour than I ever dreamed possible and also effectively take the entire summer off. I built in some "sabbatical" time by refusing to take uninteresting work or come down to far in my fees. The trick for me was being my own consulting shop (rather than going through an agency) and multiple projects so there wasn't a readily visible gap of time to future employers. Oh and several of the projects I worked/bid on were specialty work which didn't require managing people.
Previously I also have felt like there was a bit of a stigma associated with consulting but I have another former public accounting colleague who left with about 3 years of experience, did consulting for about 7 years and is now the CFO of a medium sized public company.
