Yup, we disagree on the amoral nature of putting oneself first. I think it has everything to do with morality and you don't.

Quote:
So in that instance being self-interested is amoral? It would have to be, since you believe that being self-interested is immoral. Put differently, how can someone who is acting in their self-interest (immorally) give charity (which you consider to be a moral act)? The answer may be that you believe such an individual is giving charity for the "wrong" reason (an immoral one, selfishness?), rather than the right reason (a moral one, selflessness?). Then again, why does the motivation matter, if the act itself is moral? (Some might assert that giving charity is immoral, since it creates a dependency on its recipients).
No, No, No, honey. I didn't say self interest is immoral. I said the kind of selfishness epitomized by the statement "I've got mine, forget yours" is immoral. I am inclined to agree with Plato that moral and just acts are in your true self interest. I don't care much about motive. So if you give to the food shelf because it makes you feel good. Great. It also was the moral thing to do.

We're lawyers. We get paid to disagree.

As for adjudicating our little philosophical debate, a cute and fuzzy bunny would probably do a better job thant most judges.

Re: "The Number"

I thought all you guys settled out of court to avoid actual work, then took on a few class action suits now and then to really fill up the piggy bank.

Which reminds me. If I get one more thing in the mail saying that someone I didnt know screwed me over a product I forgot I bought but I was entitled to a dollar and a quarter reimbursement after the 200m in lawyer fees, i'm gonna scream...

I received a notice of a class action settlement with Netflix based on the representation that people would have "unlimited" rentals every month. According to the settlment papers, my "share" is one free month at the 4-movies out at a time level, rather than the 3-movies out at a time level.

Re: "The Number"

I'm pleased someone tagged them on that. Both times I was a member they started 'throttling' me.

I enjoyed the guy who blogged where he set up several accounts and ordered the same movies at the same time after doing different return rates. The slow returners got the movies fast while the frequent renter/returners got them dang slow. Gee...nothing funny going on there... :

None for me. As in-house counsel, I'm strictly overhead (as opposed to being a fungible billing unit). How many for you Martha? To whom are you going to bill the time? Or would the effort simply be "marketing" or "client development"?

So you went inhouse. Good for you. I am sitting here at home, thinking about taking the mutts for a walk. No billable hours for me either. Let's call it professional reading.

OK, time for a Lawyer Joke:

Why do they bury lawyers 12 feet deep instead of 6.

Cute and fuzzy bunny is satisfied by getting lawyers with pancakes on their head to tell him to 'go screw'.

Its much cheaper.

Yep, I've spent a fortune (A FORTUNE!) on attorney's fees,
and that is in spite of doing a lot of routine stuff myself.
I suppose it was inevitable with me being naturally confrontational.
