This is from the 3/18/2013 WSJ column - The Best in ..... Financing Your Future. According to the column there are quirks in the SS laws that create two periods when single people should not file for SS. The first is between 62 and 63 and 11 months. The second is between age 65 and 66 and 8 months. Apparently, this has something to do with the way SS calculates the additional benefits that accrue to those delaying filing claims.

Thank you for posting the link. My FRA is 66 years 2 months, and I am single, so this gives me something to think about.

Seems awfully dependent on investment return assumptions. Especially when they are seeing the the breakeven age vary up and down like they describe.

I agree. This analysis is solely devoted to SS payments as though they are taken in a vacuum. In real life, other factors may dictate a different decision. Still it is a factor that some of us may want to consider.
