A thought provoking article:

I am curious how close we are to a longevity leap and corresponding extended quality of life with the stem cell research, gene therapy research, etc going on.

Because we're in it, we don't see it. But we're in the middle of a revolution. And yes, many will see their 90's and beyond.
Nothing wrong with living frugally even in retirement.

Good question. But I wonder if the majority of the impact will be on the average vs. the tail of the distribution. In other words, will many of these innovations reduce early deaths and only marginally increase the lifespan of people who are otherwise healthy.

Which is bigger - lifestyle or genetics? I don't have the data, but think it's lifestyle. If so, genetics ain't huge.

I think lifestyle can merely maximize the potential in your genetics. If all your relatives die in their 60s, all the salads in the world wont get you to 90s.

Both my parents died in their mid-70s.
Two grandparents died in their 70s. One lived to age 83 but the other only lived to age 67.
One of the reasons I took early SS is because my break-even age is 78.

Father's mother died at 31 and his dad had a fatal stroke at 55. They both died long before he met my Mother. Dad lived to be 87. You just never know.

My father's parents smoked heavily and drank heavily and died at 95 and 98. My mother's parents never smoked, rarely drank and died at 75 and 78, one while bicycling and one while golfing. Their parents died at a mix of ages. Luck is also a big part of the equation.
