Back to extended work

Well the S*** has hit the fan, the guy who replaced one of the people that worked for me quit after 32 years, and another important person with 21 years experience transferred out of the department. So I told them I would work 3 days a week, but this will be for an extended period, some months I suspect. They will have to hire from the outside then this person will need extensive training.
I did 10 hours yesterday and 8.5 today, my legs hurt, no doubt after sitting and watching CNBC for the past 1.5 years or so. As I said before I don't mind it much, don't have to contend with, customers, meetings, people, production, supplier s,data analysis, or the ever present global matrix.
To put work in context, one day of work will pay for a month of my bowling, drinking and eating after bowling, and smokes. This also will help to bridge cash flow until I am 62 and can collect SS in August.
As I type I am having a well deserved VO Manhatten up, with Cherry.

I find that I don't mind my post-retirement job much at all, especially this time of year when the weather precludes doing much anyway. In the summer I can cut back to 3 or 4 days if I want. The hours are easy, 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm, so I can sleep late and get home at a reasonable hour. There is no heavy lifting, I don't deal with rude/obnoxious people, there is little paperwork beyond filling out a time sheet, and the 3.4 mile commute takes ten minutes only if both traffic lights are red.

The money is (I think) absurd for what I do but they're paying for experience and judgment. And the bulk of it is going to savings/investments aside from buying a few toys like the motorcycle. I've more than made up for the losses in the recession so at the moment things are fairly rosy on the financial front.

The only downside is that it is somewhat boring, but after 29 years of police work I've had my fill of that kind of excitement anyway. The others working there, almost all retired police officers, agree with that assessment. And if the environment turns sour I don't need the income and can turn in the gear and go home.

So for now it works for me.

My first reaction, was "Better you than me!"

My second reaction was "They had to know that people would leave for one reason or another. Why is their management so bad that they didn't foresee this and transfer the institutional knowledge to a new-hire before the problem came up, instead of calling up retirees?" Possibly they gave you a line of BS because it's cheaper to hire someone already trained, even with a higher salary, than it is to hire someone new and train them.

But the big issue is what you want to do. Are you happy being back to work and earning the extra money between now and SS eligibility? If so, great! I completely understand and I am happy for you. But if not, and if you don't see that ad for the new hire in the paper in a week, I'd seriously think of quitting (again).

Hi Guys:I helped to write the add for the new person so it will happen.
My bowling average is around 180.
The investiment company who bought our old line company is focused on globalization, bottom line profit, merge, aquire grow the company and then sell it.
They could care less about the R&D infrastructure, therefore their is minimal staff to keep things going for the next 2-3 years, the current product lines are good enough to last without too much attention. However this new hire in my product line is necessary to retain current business should customer problems occur.
As I said in an earlier post, there are a few reasons to do this.
By old boss is in a pickle, and we have been friends for 30 years.
Wife suggested I get off my butt.
Extra cash sounds good, may need to buy a new car around August.
But on the other hand do I need to work, no.
Can I buy that car without working, yes.
Do I really want to work, no.
Extra cash between now and when I can start SS,sounds good.
I put in 25 hours for the week not too bad, enjoy seeing old coworkers, worst part is getting up.
Thanks for the questions.

Good average... my high was 200, but that was a fluke short season.. normally low 180s to high 180s... but have not bowled for a few years now.. I don't miss the pain in my wrist...

AS FOR your work... I would not mind doing some work IF I had more control of time... I am not a morning person... and would like to get in around 9:30 to 10... I don't mind working later, but not to late.. now that I have kids... and getting a better salary then when I left would be a bonus (per hour wages...)...

So, see if you can make the conditions a bit better for YOU and then you would not be as critical of the work...

It's not for knowing how to shoot, but rather for knowing where & when...
