I gave my employer six month notice that I intend to retire end of January 2013, but with vacation and personal days, my last day at work will essentially be 12/31/12. I'm not sure if this pushes me out of the class of 2012, but at least I feel relieved to finally rid myself of the one more year syndrome

Funny, my boss is already pushing me to see if I will stay longer

Unlike work, here you are free to choose for yourself. You can even change your mind about which class you want to be in.

It felt very surreal walking out of my previous employer's building Friday.

That evening I was mentally exhausted from the good byes and the culmination of the anticipation of retiring. It was a bittersweet evening.

BUT, the next morning I woke up refreshed and rested. I was so happy and the whole day I walked around with my head in the clouds.

Just do it, if you are hesitant!

The 'Welcome Back' letters have been mailed out to the teaching staff. These are the ones that remind people of perhaps one paid day full of meetings and a week or two of unpaid days when the classrooms are open for work.

How nice to have not received one.

Looks like it's time to join the class.

Gave two months notice a month ago, so I'm retiring October 1, 2012 after 32 years (plus two weeks) in the IT world, at age 56.

Might take time to adjust to not having a paycheck for the first time since I was 16, but pretty sure it won't take much time to adjust to not having to work. No more project deadlines ...

October will be busy, with a baseball tournament to play in Phoenix and another in Las Vegas, along with helping my daughter move from DC to Chicago. Heck, I might not even notice that I'm not working. Just a vague sense of something missing.

Wow, your first post and BOOM you're retired!

That was a " Short Stop."

Yeah, my first trip into these forums ... although I've used FIRECalc for quite a while, read Retire Early Home Page and the Motley Fool retire early forums for a long time.

Pulling the plug has been a goal for a long time; it's been a long career with the same company most of the way, but now it's tedious and repetitive, time to move onto something else.

And now figuring out what I want to do when I grow up is the major task on the horizon.

I have just taken myself off the list.

I have agreed a last date with my immediate boss of 30 June 2013 instead of the 31 December 2012 that I had planned when we began the discussion. For reasons that have nothing to do with financial needs but "doing the right thing" by some of my colleagues I have been persauded to stay a bit longer.

Do you play in an NABA league? I played for several years when I was in my 50s, but had to stop due worsening night time vision. It was a blast and I miss it. Best wishes on your retirement.
