Class of 2013

So it would appear that my DH is well and truly done with this job as of next Friday and joins you in officially being a part of the class of 2013. And is also free to be eaten by a bear without any consequences of note to his former company.

You can probably find a good recipe to cook up both the bear and the fellow in the recipe section. If there are any leftovers, that tremendous Class of 2013 can have a party!

Alas, I am officially leaving the class of 2013 and moving to the class of 2015. I just couldn't do it ! I was losing sleep because I don't feel I have enough cushion in my numbers. I am probably working 2 years longer than I need to, but if it turns out I have "too much money" I'm sure I'll figure out a way to spend it. I can tell you that the lost sleep would have shortened my life by the two years, so thats a wash (assuming I make it to 90 !)

Live & Learn,
Nothing worse than loosing sleep over something. That can mess with your health.

Congratulations on your re-decision. You will know in your gut when it is right.

We aren't going anywhere!

Well, it's 1/2 way through 2013 and I'm STILL working. I'll be by myself at work tomorrow (normally there are 3 of us), and I plan to take advantage of the solitude and spend some time watching my agency's online retirement briefing at my desk. Then, I'll begin to complete the various forms that are required to initiate retirement from federal service. All I have to do after that is to decide the exact date, and submit the forms to my agency's HR. I suppose I should also mention it to my supervisor...lol. I did hint that I might do it sometime this year, but I don't think she believed me. This time, it will be official.

DH's last day is tomorrow! He's been wrapping up a few things and tonight he is busily cleaning off his laptop to turn it in. I think he's excited, but also feeling a bit of the unknown. He leaves Tuesday for the next 10 weeks, though, so I don't think he'll have any time to get settled in as the man around the house until he gets back!

It is the culmination of a long-time plan of ours to see him leave this job and I'm very satisfied with where we are in our savings. Sure, he could keep working, padding our portfolio, but there's some living to do now, while we can still get out there and live dangerously.

The line between bravery and stupidity is so thin that you don't know you've crossed it until you're dead.

Retired today. Had a great send-off from the FDIC, ending nearly 35 years of Federal service. I received nice tributes (including my Agency's Flag) and touching remarks from current and former employees. My wife was there beside me and I thanked her profusely too. We had the right mix of seriousness, humor, and celebratory remarks. We also played a looping video of many of my colleagues and family wishing me well.

I'm looking forward to the next stage after this send off.

Today was the really the last day! Was going to set the alarm for 5:15 until I said to myself, what are you stupid! So set the alarm for 6:15 instead. Splurged and picked up a coffee at Dunkin Donuts, turned off the talk radio station and tuned in the classic rock station and cranked it up!

Got to work, said goodbyes, had a little gathering at noon and turned in my security badge and as I walked to my car it started to pour:)

We left straight from work and hit the road to spend a week in the Berkshires. On the way there the toll booth ticket dispenser wouldn't give me a ticket so I ended up paying the max toll when I exited the Mass Turnpike, only $3.85 so I don't think it will kill me. Also hit a bear on the turnpike and messed up my car but still drives, just no AC now and one headlight points off to the right!

So that was my last working day! A day to remember!!

Enjoying family, good food and drink now.

We were going to get rid of the car anyways so no big deal, it has 285000 miles on it so it has served me well :p A good way to start reducing our expenses in retirement!

So bottom line is that it is good to be done but seems to off to a rocky start. Hopefully it gets better from here on out :)

The plan was 2016 @ 55, but 85% medical and 52 weeks pay was looking me in the face.
Cant wait to see what uncle sam takes out of that ck!

Alas, I am officially leaving the class of 2013 and moving to the class of 2015./QUOTE]

If you are still OMY'ing excuses when it's my turn to graduate in 2019/2020, I will be disappointed. ;)

It does sound like you made the right call. The only advice I would say is don't commit for two more working years, commit to a retirement reassessment in 12 months. Who knows what the next year may bring.

Made It!

My last day of work was yesterday, and I will be on leave until my official retirement date of July 15th. The office had taken me out to eat a week ago, and I had gotten a gift several weeks before that. But, yesterday everyone was out of the office on various assignments and I was there alone all afternoon. I had already had the great pleasure of turning in my Blackberry the day before (what a relief to be free of that tether!). When the time came to leave for the last time, I placed my keys on the desk, put my computer in a drawer, locked the door behind me, and drove away. What a wonderful relief. Freedom!!

This morning we continued cutting up a large tree in the yard that was blown down in a storm on Friday night. No other concerns. The cares of the job are already beginning to slowly fade into the past, but won't be completely gone for awhile, I suppose.

Tomorrow will truly be a special Independence Day!

I've been employed a cumulative 17 years for two different megacorps working remotely from my home office. Current megacorp got a bee in their bonnet and has canceled the virtual employee program effective Nov 1.
Coincidentally same megacorp has offered a voluntary layoff package.
I'm takin it!

Zedd - 52 FIRE Class of 2013, effective Oct 25th
WHEW WHEW!

I could enjoy the extra snooze on the alarm clock & a nice hot DD coffee, but hitting a bear? Not so much.

Congrats & good luck in retirement!!!

Haven't worked since 4-26. Officially retired on 6-2. Last three weeks have been traveling in RV. Sitting in a campground outside Anchorage AK at the moment. Sunday wil mosey on down into the Kenai Peninsula for a couple of weeks. Then north to Denali. No plans after that. Got a realtor online for the moment DW agrees to sell...

Changed my date from "sometime this summer" to July 19. Feels good to have a near-term date, and getting rid of one-more-month syndrome.

The plan was 2016 @ 55, but 85% medical and 52 weeks pay was looking me in the face.
Cant wait to see what uncle sam takes out of that ck!

67 almost there - 51- July 2013

85% medical ! That's fantastic and sounds like an offer that couldn't (and shouldn't !) be refused. Happy ER !!!

Thanks. I do plan to reassess after March 2014. Just too many stressors right now. Trying to sell current home (who knows how long that will take !), downsizing and packing to move into new home (paid cash - that felt great !), scared about not having enough cushion in my budget (I've got to get over that one !!!) .... losing sleep was a bad deal. I feel more secure now. If I'm still OMY'ing in 2019 I'll be very surprised.

Six working days to go.

DH's greatest fear...that working for me will be far worse than working anywhere else!
He may have a point. :)

Early on I found it worthwhile to have a place to go where I could spend a couple of hours. Kind of a hideout or fishing hole. Since I don't fish, I chose the local public library.

My sister-in-law told my wife she should have given me a "honey-do" list before I gave my notice. Might have kept me at the office a few more years. :D

Worked with a guy that at 74 was still doing th the 60 hour a week OMY thing, he was convinced the honey-do would be worse.
