Wow, I turned in my notice today that I will be going part-time. Estimated full ER Dec 2015 now! Hard to believe this is really happening. Surreal.

I am on track for Jan 2015 at the age of 63. I can't claim ER status but the R is still there. I was FI in 2005 at age 53. What took me so long? Well, it's complicated.

I'm ready to leave now but I am struggling to not do so. I'll get hit with an extra $65,000 tax bill if I leave before then. I was going to retire in Jan 2014 but my boss was desperate for people to cover work. He took a chance on me when I was in need and I didn't want to leave him in a bind.

April 1, 2015 looks like the date for me. Will be 54. Plan for DH to begin ER on Jan 3, 2015, and he will be 46. Very exciting for us to be making these plans!

You can add me to the list also!

I'm feeling pretty confident that December 2015 will be my ER date (age 48). The retirement calculators all seem to say I am good to go now, but I want to give it OMY for some extra cushion (heard that before on these forums!). I hope my wife will be ready to retire then also (age 46), but she's not quite there yet mentally.

I am planning on working maybe a couple of hundred hours a year for the first few years of ER, just to make that psychological leap from being an aggressive saver to starting to spend down my portfolio easier.

Plan is to FIRE next year. Currently 55. I think we are good now but we are doing a remodel and would prefer to pay most of it with income rather than savings and I need to get my knee scoped so ditto there. When in 2015 is the current question and that's still under discussion. Maybe in July as a birthday present

No need to work longer than you need to unless you love what you do...I don't

I'm down to 234 days until I resign. It's starting to feel pretty "real" now. I started my countdown at about 670 days. With 234 days to go, I am planning what I will be doing once I am free. First thing I'll do is go camping on Cumberland Island for a week. I have to do that first while the weather is good. Then I'll start in on my bucket list during the summer and start on the home fix-it list in the fall. You folks RE in Jan and Feb, how are you planning your departure?

All subject to change, of course, but my plan is to:

  • Give notice on Fri Nov 14 2014. I have my resignation letter made out and everything.
  • Last day, and walk out the door, on Fri Feb 13 2015.
  • Spend the next few weeks giving away stuff I don't need to Goodwill, traveling back to Colorado to find a house to buy or rent, and then when my housing in Colorado is secured, pack up what little I have left in my Jeep and drive back.

I know some might comment on my 3 months notice, so I'll explain. My intent isn't to be a "nice guy". Far from it, as I'm playing this to my advantage because I know once I give notice, especially around the holidays, it will throw them into a tizzy, and they won't be able to dump any more projects on me my last few months there. They'll be scrambling to have me involved in interviewing and hiring a replacement, and doing documentation and turnover. Whoever my replacement is will inherit all the crappy projects they're already planning for me next year.

I'm not the least bit worried about them getting rid of me early. Even if they blindsided me and did that, it's not going to hurt me that bad financially if I had to leave just 3 months of unvested shares on the table. In fact, I'd probably go back to Colorado early and get to enjoy the full ski season.

It's going to be fun seeing their reaction when I give notice. I bet they try to increase my salary, or give me another RSU grant, to get me to stay, but there's no chance I'd do it. I want to get on with my life, and stop staring at a computer all day, so once I give notice, I'm a lame duck and outta there in February.

Nov 14 is going to be a very interesting day

Well there is something I haven't done yet, write my resignation letter. I'm going to give plenty of notice too, 8 weeks. I want to help my boss find a replacement and I want to buy football tickets which usually come available to employees the first of May. I hadn't really thought about writing that resignation letter. That puts some finality on the work situation, doesn't it?

I'm retiring next January. DW will continue working, so I'm planning to do some solo domestic travel and visit friends and family I haven't seen in too long. I'll probably head south in the winter months and north as things warm up a bit. And there all those organization projects (digitizing thousands of slides and photos, etc.) that don't require warm weather...

I'm clearly an outlier in terms of my retirement announcement timing. I'm retiring next January, and I told my boss about my plans last March. My intention was absolutely to be a "nice guy." I've put way too much of my life into my place of employment to want to hurt it. I want to see it continue to thrive and succeed. I just don't want to work there anymore. ;-)

Like LoneAspen, I wasn't too worried about getting screwed by my employers. If they did, I'd find a way to make up for the lost savings. And the costs to senior leadership wouldn't be trivial.

This has been the right choice for me. I'm guiding the search for my replacement. My team has plenty of time to think about how they'll adapt to the coming changes. So far, so good.

Definitely! It was therapeutic for me, and allowed me to see the light at the end of the tunnel more clearly. Even though I'll have BS to deal with at work until November when I give notice, having that letter is like having a "get out of jail free" card in my pocket.

No matter what happens at work, no matter how stressed I might get, in less than 3 months I get to hand in that letter and POOF...all my troubles are over. If somebody tries to dump a crappy project in my lap, thinking I'm going to work like a dog to get in done before I leave, I'm going to tell them the most powerful word in the English language...

"No!"

And there's nothing they can do about it. I feel like one of those old timey movie villains with the evil mustache, laughing maniacally and wringing my hands

I've been counting down the Monday's for nearly 2 years and today hit "26 Monday's to go". Getting excited as well as nervous.

My slice of Megacorp is reorganizing, so I decided to avoid OMY and make things better for everyone by giving my execs a heads-up that I would be retiring soon so that they would not put me in a new position only to have me quit on them a few months later. There were the flattering attempts to convince me to stay, but I held firm (although I did agree to delay two months longer than I originally proposed).

The ironic thing is that yesterday my pending retirement was announced to staff as well as my promotion. Yes, despite telling them I was leaving, they still decided I should run this new org for the next few months, and it is a promotion in title (not $ unfortunately).

They may think that I'll succumb to the lure of the challenges and agree to stay on long-term, but I'm nearly certain that won't happen.

Just never imagined that the company reaction to my retirement announcement would be to promote me.
